US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria[W:354]

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Greetings, US Conservative. :2wave:

I realize that ISIS is a threat, but I also wonder if Israel doesn't feel a little uncomfortable that we are partnering with countries that have openly called for their destruction. I've also noticed that Palestine has been quiet lately, too. They aren't making the headlines any more, but that could be because the media is totally focused on the current situation with the air strikes, I guess, and we just aren't hearing their complaining about Israel, even though I very much doubt they've changed their mind!

I think Israel understands our actions, they are after all our number one ally in the region. The arabs all know this. It was however, just one attack. Hamas has been fairly quiet since the latest gaza conflict because they took such a beating, but I'd imagine they think it unwise to talk crap at a time like this.

Israel knows its role right now is to keep quiet. Its probably a smart idea.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

That's what I'm saying.

The enemy is practically telling America it wants them to send troops back in.

That's gotta tell you something.

If the enemy is goading you very strongly to do something, chances are it could be a mistake.

I agree.

All the deliberate publicity of beheadings, dead children, all of it what they knew would trigger rage in the west.

What needs to be asked is why? Why do they want the US on the ground? What do we not know and they do? What do they want us distracted from?

Is it merely that they want to kill American soldiers, or do they have a deeper, more sinister strategy?

Considering these people waited years to take a second stab at the WTC, how cleverly they used the lack of internal security in the US, I am betting it's way more than killing Americans soldiers en masse.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Yeah I heard, I'd guess the Syrian jet veered into Israeli airspace by accident. Turkey did the same thing last year, IIRC.

Well, I do give BO credit on this Khorason Group and he did have to play it like this.....note he did make sure the MS Media kept their mouths shut for once.

Last week, James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, said the Khorasan Group posed a "potential threat." But senior Obama administration officials, briefing reporters Tuesday under ground rules that they not be identified, said the intelligence was both more precise and more dire than Clapper suggested. "We were monitoring active plotting that posed an imminent threat to the United States and potentially our allies," one official said. "That was the united view of our intelligence community."

The Khorasan Group, which consists of al-Qaida veterans who fought in Afghanistan and Pakistan, is focused on attacking the West, not the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Mayville said.....snip~

U.S. officials: Terrorist group was nearing attack

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

It's not a right vs left issue.

When it comes to how the dems flipped on Bush over Iraq it was ALL about politics.
For example I remember when the whole surge went down in 07, and how eager dems were to cut and run (including Obama).
I took that lesson personally-that dems would INTENTIONALLY lose a war for politics-and I dont think I will ever forget it.

I dont care what they say at this point. They can't fight the US, the arabs, Syria, the Kurds, Shiite militias, and what remains of the Iraqi military and have it end well for them. What we need is boots on the ground and persistence.

The day we switched Iraq back to the petrodollar, which was the day after we took Baghdad, we won the war. Mission accomplished.

Everything that's happened afterward is incidental and doesn't really affect the well-being of the American People one way or the other.

As long as Iraq is selling its oil in dollars, and as long as the terrorists aren't messing with oil production (hint... they aren't. weird, huh?), then our objectives have been accomplished.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

You mean an all-out offensive? Naval and Air supported invasion of a large enough enough force to destroy, disband and disarm the enemy?

There is the small problem of the mid terms and Obama's "peace" prize and the still lingering smell of how Al-Qaeda was put out of business in Libya and how he had solved Iraq before and that maybe this war on terror thing is not winnable, like Vietnam.

Hard to make all that work with body bags coming back. Might have had there been some success in the past, but it's been nearly 14 years of constant warfare, your allies have been ground down, and the nation is weary of being frightened all the time.

I mean a limited offensive, a moderate military presence, to be replaced with a permanent military presence. This isn't desert storm or the Iraq invasion. Its an eradication campaign.

Our President does not have the stomach for definitive action.

If we had exited in 2007, ISSI wouldn't be ascendant now.

The whole problem is Bush's decapitation of the Iraqi leadership and the imposition of an Iranian Shi'ite puppet who preferred to stoke sectarian conflict than lead a nation.

Bush did the Stupid Thing by invading. Then he did the other Stupid Thing by surging. And now we got ISSI.

Even ISIS serves our interests, if you think about it. The more instability, the more fighting that goes on in the region, the more the Iraqi government needs us to provide "security."

This gives us leverage in negotiations all over the region.

It also, conveniently, gives us an excuse to go after our next target.... Assad in Syria and ultimately, the Iranians.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

What is going to happen to Israel as a result of all this? I'm fairly certain they are watching this very closely. Damascus in Syria is one of the world's oldest cities, and despite being a relatively small country, Syria has become very important to Obama for some reason, despite the fact that other ME countries are training and arming ISIS, and doing so openly, and bragging about it? Is all this a prelude to the hoped-for destruction of Israel by other ME countries? Just musing...

I am not sure whether Syria signed a peace agree with Israel or not. But Assad and Syria has ceased all aggression towards them. You can be sure if Assad goes, so too does either the peace and you can beat whatever replaces Assad the odds are they will be very anti-Israel and perhaps gear up for another war.

It is like I said many times, I do not think anyone in Washington has every thought what a post Assad Syria will be like. It is like everyone in Washington has tunnel vision and can only see Assad, nothing else.

Sure. BTW most of Iraqs oil is in the south, and ISIS isn't there. Weird, huh?

You are right about one thing-ISIS would not be the top dog because Al Qaida in Iraq would be. We killed most of them.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Hate to say it but this is one reason why arabs should be the tip of the spear against ISIS-they play by arab rules which mean they fight to kill the enemy. We should be paying for the fuel and handing over all our "dumb" bomb inventory over to the arabs to use.

I like it. Besides the Arabs know who is ISIS and who are the innocent civilians. Not that innocent civilians who get in their way would be much of a hindrance so to speak.

And sadly ISIS hides behind civilians, just like in Gaza.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Very true, and let's not forget in mosques and schools and hospitals. ISIS knows how we operate and ISIS knows how to turn our humanitarian instincts against us. It is a good thing that no Hitler or Tojo has arisen today. IF we fought WWII like we been fighting our wars since Vietnam, those two would have won.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Im not discounting that the Iraqi military and the Kurds wont be critical here, im saying up to this point-they have not been able to deal with ISIS. This, of course is less important in Syria-since we aren't there. But as of now and barring a massively successful air campaign (doubtful-its always symbolism over substance with this president) we can't win against these guys.

Once we establish superiority than perhaps COIN ops like drones will be valuable, but they require people on the ground to be most effective.

How quickly CONs forget the recent past. The Northern Alliance couldn't deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan until the USofA started a bombing campaign in support... did you forget that???? :doh

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

IF we fought WWII like we been fighting our wars since Vietnam, those two would have won.

If we were under the same kind of threat, we would. But times have changed. The idea now is to depose tyrants and foster democracy; that costs a lot less blood and treasure.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Obama abandoned it. If Obama can't play with the cards he was dealt, as every president before him has had to do, maybe he should just quit.

Greetings, humbolt. :2wave:

Negotiations always involve compromise - otherwise they are not called negotiations, but ultimatums! This "my way or the highway or I walk out" thinking has hurt us in Iraq, Libya (and for a while in Egypt until the people booted the MB out of power), and we are now seeing the results, and paying the price for ISIS and others gaining strength. Now I read that this "non-war" is going to go on for years and perhaps a decade? Why? Weren't we going bankrupt fast enough to suit those who are masterminding this crap? :bs

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Because Obama is working with Arabs, Israel is going to keep quiet as a church mouse unless its directly attacked again. They have struck syria in the recent past though.

I could be wrong, but I believe Israel would come to the aid, perhaps quietly, of Jordan should they be attacked as IS has suggested.

Absolutely. Propaganda is vital to how these terrorists operate.

Of all the terrorist/fundamentalist/radical attacks in the history of the middle east, from your memory, how many of them have been against the oil fields? In any country.

I can't think of a single one from memory.

I think it's obvious they believe, we'll eventually switch to helping them by fighting against Assad and his Russian backers. We didn't even hit ISIL first, but rather another group of former AQ members called the Khorasan Group that were planning imminent attacks against the US and Western interests.

When you have such a mess of different interests and adversaries all mixed up, they can easily turn. All it would take is for Syrian troops to miscalculate, like they did with a fighter getting shot down over the Golan Heights.

But its not small, its systemic, its growing, and its coming for the west.
Thats enough for me.

Nah, I'd still do unpredictable strategies (SPEC OPS) first, before I uncorked the mighty war machine. Just because we have the biggest, doesn't require that we utilize it every time.

No. Did you forget we also fought with them on the ground? (boots on the ground)

Incidentally, but the N.A. and our forces used horses so that we wouldn't be hit by friendly fire. Our air assets killed anything that moved that wasn't on a horse.
