US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria[W:354]

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Actions. They are objective. And they he is objectively incompetent. Hence the lost peace. Peace should not be squandered for political gain, and hopefully this will teach Obama a lesson-but I doubt it.

Your knowledge of recent history is so appalling, it would be funny, were it not the crazy narrative of millions of low information conservatives.

But in truth I think you know -- you just have bad Obamaphobic motives, which is why you have it in your sig line. A guilty conscience.

Its amazing you know the telos of people. Whats Obama's telos with bombing Syria?

Already answered that. But you know it. You just want to indulge your low information narrative. And I just want to point out its absurdities. Carry on.

(By the way, telos -- wrong word)

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

I see, hence his "no boots on the ground" comments. Because airstrikes win wars. And yes, we are at war-with a new enemy-ISIS.

Ahhh trite BS from the armchair crowd... We don't need to put major conventional ground forces in Iraq to 'win'. Ever since two air dropped weapons negated the need for 1 million US causalities invading Japan there has been a shift.

Now we can support OTHER brands of boots with air strikes and push back on ISIL. We can cut their funding which was a huge body blow to al-Queera. We don't need and this nation won't support a repeat of the Bush Bungle in the desert (nor can we afford the bill)

What ISIL wants is to draw us back into the ME for another round of 'War on Islam'. We will never be rid of extremists until the Sunni governments in the region cut off support for them. We never learn the complete lesson, we think our military can do whatever we direct, our fighting force can suffer any loss, our economy can write more checks...

Like drunks, until the governments of the region want peace there will be no peace. To think we as outsiders in damn near everyway possible can force 'peace' upon a repressed people ruled by a self indulging series of despots is the biggest kind of hubris imaginable... but do keep playing short game reactive checkers... :peace

You are the one lamenting the freedoms of our Press
I've said nothing of the kind US Conservative and we all know this diversion game of yours when you've been schooled.
The first amendment is too important for you to impune, please dont.
You blatantly lie diverting to the first amendment from me saying that YOUR President doesn't have to tell you his plans.
Nor does he have to tell the blabbermouth clowns in the congress--as per the 2001 resolution .

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

Well Obama can commence on his bombing but most experts have come out and stated his "plan" will do little. He wants to arm the Syrian rebels and train them in Saudi Arabia which will take up to a year so until then Obama will be micro managing every bomb raid just like he micro managed every drone hit in Afghanistan. From all I have gathered, the military is pretty frustrated with Obama.

Personally my greatest concerns are over the reports that some of the American citizens that were fighting with ISIS have returned to the U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono, a Hawaii Democrat, stood to object when Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz asked for 'unanimous consent' to pass his bill quickly in the Senate about a week ago. The measure would have terminated the citizenship of any American who joins or assists a terror group that's likely to attack US. Then you had Secretary of State John Kerry tell Congress that 'foreign fighters' who help ISIS should return 'in handcuffs – not through customs with their passport', well someone needs to tell Kerry that you need boots on the ground to accomplish that one. Kerry also said he has authority to cancel passports so why didn't he before these traitors got back into this country? I don't know about the rest of you, but because of the complete failure of this administration in their handling of foreign affairs and our national security, I am not feeling real safe at the moment. The report did say the FBI had these people under surveillance. That's nice but they never should have made it back into the country in the first place.

American airstrikes against ISIS targets are under way in Syria, according to a Pentagon official.

"I can confirm that U.S. military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL [ISIS] terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles," Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said. "Given that these operations are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide additional details at this time. The decision to conduct theses strikes was made earlier today by the U.S. Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief. We will provide more details later as operationally appropriate."

Hmm, I wonder what was the hurry, to bomb in Syria I mean. I suppose if the strikes were targeting ISIS headquarters, going after their leaders, good. But if it was just to show Assad we can bomb anywhere in Syria we want, bad. Seems to me we need to get that capable ground force together whoever is going to make it up. Seems we should start with that and then rolling ISIS back out of Iraq first.

But then again, if we can cut some of the heads off ISIS, that is good. I will wait and see what future reports say. This may be good or it may be bad. I still think we ought to make nice with Assad, his 250,000 man army is just the ground forces we want and need if we are not going to put any American boots on the ground. Just my opinion there.

Im not discounting that the Iraqi military and the Kurds wont be critical here, im saying up to this point-they have not been able to deal with ISIS. This, of course is less important in Syria-since we aren't there. But as of now and barring a massively successful air campaign (doubtful-its always symbolism over substance with this president) we can't win against these guys.

Once we establish superiority than perhaps COIN ops like drones will be valuable, but they require people on the ground to be most effective.

You were saying something about FOX news, as if they are the problem. POTUS is accountable to Americans, and while he may not be required to tell us his plans-its certainly not going to help his popularity or his politics.

You nailed it. These are times that require REAL leadership, and we just dont have that. The constant refrain of this administration is failure. It inspires exactly ZERO confidence in me.

This probably has more to do with Obama's falling numbers and politics than any real desire to combat ISIS. Assad has had great difficulty for years dealing with these bad actors-its going to take more than a handful of strikes to actually deal with the issue.

I think it will take a competent ground force along with air strikes. but as I said, I will wait and see.

And if Russia decides it's okay to bomb certain targets in America, even though we're a sovereign country just as Syria is, is that going to be okay too? What :bs: is this? And exactly who is doing the bombing?

So it has begun... against all advice, we're bombing a sovereign country who has stated in public that this should not be done without their consent! The UN has agreed! WTH?

Pol, you know as much about this as I do. I think the president's strategy can work, but it all depends on some other nations ground forces which at the present time looks like no other nation is interested. Next best bet as I said many times would be to make nice with Assad and utilizing his ground forces and air force, in coordination with him to drive ISIS out of first Syria and then have them in a pincer between Syria who can advance from the west and hopefully a reconstituted Iraqi Army from the east.

But hey, I am just an arm chair quarterback these days.

And for six years the leadership has done things in the name of politics and not what was best for the country. The war in Iraq was unpopular. But instead of taking care of business Obama wanted a trophy by claiming he ended it. And now we all pay. Everything they have done has left us as sitting ducks. They refused to close the border where our own intelligence has said those who pose a threat to us have been entering through the porous border through Mexico. They refused to reign in the spending and the only real cuts they were willing to abide to were those to the military when we need them the most. And now our debt has become a national security issue. Even John Panetta spoke out this week and said Obama has screwed up in regard to Iraq. By announcing there will be no ground troops, he emboldens the enemy as he looks even less than a paper tiger, more like a friggen paper bunny. By not taking precautions to stop those citizens with passports that they were well aware had gone to Syria/Iraq to fight with ISIS from re-entering this country, they have put us all at even more greater risk especially when the call from the leadership of ISIS is to those members in their homelands to start killing. So here we are sitting ducks with targets on our backs. Quack Quack.

This is just unbelievable! Sitting ducks is now what we are! I just heard a few minutes that we're bombing Syria, too - I sure hope we got their permission to do so, because we were warned by the UN....

The world doesn't operate according to kindergarden rules of fairness. If this troubles you then you probably don't have the stomach for international affairs.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

What happened to "in time of war, we stand behind the commander-in-chief"?

Shame on the partisan speech above. Both Bush and Obama committed blunders in Iraq, and both contributed to the mess we have today. No need to single them out, at this point.

What is important now is to decimate the extremists who have beheaded two Americans, countless other foreigners, and their own people, and will undoubtedly become a threat to our national interests and even our homeland (we don't want a terrorist haven there; they will end up committing 9/11-like attacks here).

So, let's stand behind our pilots and sailors who are bombing those f....ers, and put down the partisan divisions, will you?

Now, if we can bomb them sufficiently and several other countries in the region including several Arab states put boots on the ground, we can win this without further risking our troops. If it doesn't work, then I'm sure there will be reassessment and American boots will go in.

For now, let's just support our CiC and our brave pilots, and hope that none of our aircraft is brought down.

Me, I love America and put it *way* above partisan politics. Shame on all Americans who don't think like me.

Re: US Airstrikes Under Way in Syria

How many men and women would have paid with their lives for almost five years after 2010?
who would have been blamed for that--nothing Obama does will ever be right with with righties.

We would have had a guerilla war like the one that helped bring down the soviet Union--helped by Russia.

And then we have the border meme.
And of course the debt sidetrack .

The WH has stated it wont seek permission, despite Syria's requests. That was a few weeks back, dont know if anything has changed.

So you openly admit that Mr. Obama is not worried about his popularity and politics with how he is conducting his strategy.
This is as it should be--too bad your side doesn't see it that way .
