The other thing to note is that it's in our best interest to create "security dependence" in the middle east. Having these factions fight each other works to America's advantage.

Ask yourself this.... how does a ragtag group of "whackjob Muslims" conquer Afghanistan? Conquer large swaths of Iraq and Syria? It takes a trained, organized, and well equipped army to accomplish that.

We armed and trained them to fight our geopolitical foes, the Russians, Assad, Sadaam Hussein, the Iranians. Those nations that actually pose a security risk to the way of life of the American Public.

These "whackjob muslims" are just the ones that got out of hand.... yes, they deserve blame for being fundamentalist nuts, but we also shoulder some blame for arming and training them to begin with.

The airstrikes in Syria have little to do with fighting terrorists. The geopolitical goal of the United States is to topple the Assad regime or to force it in to submission.

You might not know this, but in addition to airstrikes, we are currently arming what our administration is calling "the moderate resistance" forces in Syria to fight a ground war there. The airstrikes are nothing but air cover for these "moderate resistance forces."
You know, I've always found it so fascinating how people believe that the people aren't able to do anything without the US. How such low opinions you have of them. If it's really such a mystery how in the heard of the middle east, you could have a rebel movement rise to prominence, and take land in Iraq (coincidentally, Sunni land), then perhaps you need to do some more research.

In fact, I wish American Foreign Policy was as well thought out and crafted as people like you want to believe. The truth is, we've stumbled into just about every foreign policy crisis that's come up in the past twenty years. You are right that we did have the stated goal of ousting Assad (after all, did you see what he was doing to his people... also we did take a long time getting into that came), but that isn't the same as you would push that we intentionally armed radical outfits like ISIS. The fact of the matter was that in the beginning, one of the most prominent groups was the MB, and if you recall, they were undergoing a PR scrub down in Egypt at the same time all this was coming up. Think about it this way, if we really wanted ISIS toppled, just how far do you think we're really willing to push the whole Air Strikes thing? Knowing that at this moment, the biggest enemy Assad has, is ISIS?

    Stupid, stupid, stupid.

This will, imo, do NOTHING except make the area more volatile and get more Americans killed in reprisal terrorist attacks - which will mean more Americans will lose more freedoms/rights as the government uses these attacks to justify more and more control over the masses.

    This will NOT end well.

Let the locals fix their own problems.

American airstrikes against ISIS targets are under way in Syria, according to a Pentagon official.

"I can confirm that U.S. military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL [ISIS] terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles," Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said. "Given that these operations are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide additional details at this time. The decision to conduct theses strikes was made earlier today by the U.S. Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief. We will provide more details later as operationally appropriate."

Except it seems that Arab Nations are participating in air strikes as well, at least according to a Jordanian Govt official I heard from earlier.

You think Americans are losing freedoms/rights now, what do you think will happened if/when a WMD is set off in a major American city?

I do think in this case that the combination of Assad, Iraq and Iran could deal with the situation even without US air strikes if they got coordinated.

If you watched any of the vids they're so keen on posting you'd realize that they aren't well trained and they aren't well equipped.
If anything they are only well organized.

Why did we fight the Nazi's and the Japanese in WW2? Why didn't it just create more terrorists? Why didn't appeasement work?
