US Intercepts 8 Russian Warplanes Near Alaska

U.S., Canadian jets intercept 8 Russian aircraft

Two F-22 fighter jets intercepted six Russian military airplanes that neared the western coast of Alaska, military officials said Friday.

Lt. Col. Michael Jazdyk, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said the U.S. jets intercepted the planes about 55 nautical miles from the Alaskan coast at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday.

The Russian planes were identified as two IL-78 refueling tankers, two Mig-31 fighter jets and two Bear long-range bombers. They looped south and returned to their base in Russia after the U.S. jets were scrambled.
Just 2 F-22s? Against six? Wow, the US military must have a lot of faith in an untested aircraft.... I wonder who would have won in a dogfight against F-22s and MIG-31s...

Standard procedure to send fighters up to unidentified or suspect aircraft. The Russians do the exact same thing when the US/NATO sends their planes "too close" to Russian airspace.

This isn't the first time that Russia has invaded U.S. airspace in recent months, on another forum I remember posting the story of them buzzing the California coast with nuclear capable bombers, Putin is out of his mind. If they were actually in U.S. airspace this time we should have shot them out of the ****ing sky, the F-22's would have completely merked their laughable technologically antiquated planes hell the advanced European fighters can't even get radar lock on the F-22 when they're staring right at them during war games it was actually pretty funny to listen to their radio chatter when they played the clip on a special they did on the Raptor on the Military Channel.

The two Mig-31's are no match for the F-22's. Their best bet for survival would be to use their speed to run as fast as they could away from the F-22's.

You're making quite a few assumptions there. You don't know that 2 F-22s were the only weapons brought to bear on the Russian aircraft. You don't know that F-22s engage in conventional dog-fighting (FYI F22s avoid conventional dog fighting). You don't know that MIGs can out perform F-22s.

And most importantly, you don't realize that the US would absorb the lose of 2 pilots in exchange for the resulting international political capital.

    Just something to think about

Russian aircraft have also recently done the same with Finland and the Baltic States.

The US economy can't handle another war right now.

What? There has been no "invasion" of US airspace. They are flying in international airspace and have every right to be there.

In air combat simulations 12 Raptors have went 108-0 against other advanced aircraft. The Raptors would have shot down the MIGs before the MIGs ever saw them as they would not be able to see them on radar and would only see them through visual contact which would never happen and even if they had infrared systems (which they didn't) the radar of the F22 has a lot more range than even the Eurofighters PIRATE systems, especially considering that the Raptors are equipped with heat dissipating technology.

Exactly right, and this kind of thing happens a few times every year as well.
