U.S., Canadian jets intercept 8 Russian aircraft

Two F-22 fighter jets intercepted six Russian military airplanes that neared the western coast of Alaska, military officials said Friday.

Lt. Col. Michael Jazdyk, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said the U.S. jets intercepted the planes about 55 nautical miles from the Alaskan coast at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday.

The Russian planes were identified as two IL-78 refueling tankers, two Mig-31 fighter jets and two Bear long-range bombers. They looped south and returned to their base in Russia after the U.S. jets were scrambled.

Just 2 F-22s? Against six? Wow, the US military must have a lot of faith in an untested aircraft.... I wonder who would have won in a dogfight against F-22s and MIG-31s...

Standard procedure to send fighters up to unidentified or suspect aircraft. The Russians do the exact same thing when the US/NATO sends their planes "too close" to Russian airspace.

This isn't the first time that Russia has invaded U.S. airspace in recent months, on another forum I remember posting the story of them buzzing the California coast with nuclear capable bombers, Putin is out of his mind. If they were actually in U.S. airspace this time we should have shot them out of the ****ing sky, the F-22's would have completely merked their laughable technologically antiquated planes hell the advanced European fighters can't even get radar lock on the F-22 when they're staring right at them during war games it was actually pretty funny to listen to their radio chatter when they played the clip on a special they did on the Raptor on the Military Channel.

The two Mig-31's are no match for the F-22's. Their best bet for survival would be to use their speed to run as fast as they could away from the F-22's.

You're making quite a few assumptions there. You don't know that 2 F-22s were the only weapons brought to bear on the Russian aircraft. You don't know that F-22s engage in conventional dog-fighting (FYI F22s avoid conventional dog fighting). You don't know that MIGs can out perform F-22s.

And most importantly, you don't realize that the US would absorb the lose of 2 pilots in exchange for the resulting international political capital.

Just something to think about :2wave:

Russian aircraft have also recently done the same with Finland and the Baltic States.

The US economy can't handle another war right now.

What? There has been no "invasion" of US airspace. They are flying in international airspace and have every right to be there.

In air combat simulations 12 Raptors have went 108-0 against other advanced aircraft. The Raptors would have shot down the MIGs before the MIGs ever saw them as they would not be able to see them on radar and would only see them through visual contact which would never happen and even if they had infrared systems (which they didn't) the radar of the F22 has a lot more range than even the Eurofighters PIRATE systems, especially considering that the Raptors are equipped with heat dissipating technology.

Exactly right, and this kind of thing happens a few times every year as well.

That's why I said "if". I wrote that before I read that they were 50 nautical miles outside of U.S. airspace and thus not overflying U.S. territorial waters.

Defending US airspace is not an act of war, the Russians would have done the same thing to US aircraft invading their airspace and have done so in the past.

Defending US airspace is not an act of war...
No one said it was. My you're very short sighted. Destroying Russian aircraft would lead to war.

Mornin' Simplexity. :2wave: Also the UK and Sweeden.....and more than just a few times this year with the US. Of course some would have us think that back to back days with the incident and with fighters around to, is common. You know.....its just the usual normal routine.

Russian fighters intercepted by U.S. near Alaska.....

Two Russian fighters entered a US "air defense identification zone" two days ago and were intercepted by American F-22 jets near Alaska, military officers said. The incursion on Wednesday was followed by a second incident on Thursday involving two Russian long-range bombers, which flew into Canada's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) and were intercepted by two Canadian F-18 jets, officers said

Although Russian aircraft have entered the zone previously it was "the first time in a long time" that fighter jets passed through the area, said a US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. To safeguard a country's air space, air defense identification zones extend beyond territorial air space and are designed as a buffer to give a government more time to respond to potentially hostile aircraft. But the zones do not fall under international treaties and are not regulated under international law. The Russian aircraft flights coincided with a visit by Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko to Washington, where he made an impassioned address Thursday before a joint session of the US Congress, denouncing Russia's military intervention in his country.....snip~

Next time Russian planes approach US air space....

We should sramble a piper cub to meet them. If that is not practical, then some kind of obviously unarmed weather plane, or perhaps a chartered civilian jet with the gaudiest livery scheme imaginable- with all the lights on.

I cant think of any better way to tell Putin that his pattern of meglamaniacal sabre rattlling is a joke and has absolutely no military value as far as intimidation goes.

I just watched a couple of MiG-31 versus F-22 flight simulators. The F-22's won each time. The MiG's were detected several miles out while the F-22's went undetected except when they engaged their afterburners. Otherwise, the F-22 attained lock and fired their missiles and the MiG-31's never had a chance even when they detected the missles coming at them.

Granted, this was all simulations, but very impressive.

Curious, though...did Russia actually build the MiG-31 Firefox from the movie of the same name? (Re: Clint Eastwood era)

F-22s are operational. The F-35 is untested so to speak.

With respect to an in-close dogfight, that's a different matter. From ABC News:

The United States has spent nearly $80 billion to develop the most advanced stealth fighter jet in history, the F-22 Raptor, but the Air Force recently found out firsthand that while the planes own the skies at modern long-range air combat, it is “evenly matched” with cheaper, foreign jets when it comes to old-school dogfighting.

There will remain a role for manned fighters for the next few decades, but I don't think they'll be produced in the same numbers as the last ones, F-18's etc. They have plans on ordering a bunch of F-35's but technology, costs and unmanned aircraft are quickly changing the concept of modern warfare.

Its not the Mig 31 we need to watch out for. Its their Mig 35.

The account cited didn't say anything about Russia invading U.S. airspace. It stated that the aircraft were intercepted sixty-plus miles off the coast.

If that's a problem, the obvious solution is never to let an opponent's aircraft close the range before shooting it down. It's like saying a highly skilled marksman with a top-notch sniper rifle is at a disadvantage, if he lets an enemy with a cheap snub-nosed revolver approach across open ground to within ten yards of him, because at such short range the revolver is so much more maneuverable and quicker to aim.

Ummm...it looks more like the old F-14 Tomcat.

View attachment 67173257

Wings are more curved and not as far swept back and the air intakes are underneath and not on the sides, but it's pretty much the same look. From what the video indicates it's the onboard stealth electronics and surface to ground radar coupling that makes it a threat.

Interesting...

Allegedly they are working on the Mig 37/47 - 5th generation. Which they say will be able to orbit and drop in from outside the Atmosphere. If they can keep their pilot conscious that is.

Something seriously went wrong if a F22 ever actually entered into a conventional dogfight.

Their long range Air to Air strike capabilities are unmatched by any existing Fighter.

Any Country still focusing on and or building a platform based on a air to air confrontation between Fighter jets is wasting their time and money

I know that some Marine FA-18 C fighters went up against an equal number of Air Force F-22's in a mock dog fight. The F-22's won.

The Marine Corps FA-18 C is over 20 years old.
