Adrian Peterson indicted in child injury case in Texas

My dad spanked me with a belt when I was little, and yes sometimes it left marks. However still to this day he is the most patient man I've ever met. I've never heard him raise his voice, and when he spanked us it was never in anger. I'm not traumatized at all!! In the same breath, this little boy had a bruise to the groin area which tells me that he got carried away with his discipline.
Agreed. Marks on the torso and legs are all pretty clear indicators to me that it would be qualified as abusive. When I read the first accounts I thought "switch"? Hell...get back to me when you have a half crazed foster mother using the heel end of her high heels. A switch is something granny used. But that was before I saw the pictures.

I'm all for corporal punishment. Kids that don't get it are typically the wildest and most ill-behaved you come across. They struggle in life.

However, this is ridiculous. A welt or two is one thing, but that was a bludgeoning. And NEVER should a 4-year-old get a spanking with a belt or switch. You can make your point with a small child with a sharp scolding and a stern pat on the butt.

Sad, this child is only 4 years old.

Here's another good article and in the first video,
shown is the type of tree branch used and leaves stuffed into the child's mouth along with other details of the case.

Adrian Peterson Indicted For Child Abuse, Turns Himself In « CBS Minnesota

I will admit I have spanked my children when it was warranted. I never drew blood, I never left a mark, I never forced anything down their throats. I reserved judgment when I first heard this story break over the weekend, preferring to let the justice system do its work, but the evidence we've seen so far is pretty damning.

Times have definitely changed. Getting a whuppin with a 'switch' wouldnt have registered a complaint not to long ago.

if it was someone else's kid then i have issues with that.

if it is your kid and you are not leaving marks and just swatting them on the butt then no there is no child abuse.

This is another Ray Rice screw up in the making. Just as any sane person could have deduced from the first video of Rice dragging his fiance out of the elevator that he beat her in the elevator it is clear from the wounds on this child that Adrian Peterson brutalized him. You don't need to see a video to guess at what it looked like. He beat this child with a stick hard enough to break skin.

Yeah these look painful.

Are those of the child in question? (If so, I dont think it's appropriate that those were released)

If so, and it was my kid, I'd have driven down to TX, drugged the player, tied him to the back bumper of my pickup, and drove him around town....for hours or until stopped by the police. He wouldnt have any skin left either way.

Ya Know you post seems a little sanctimonious to me. While the photos show a severe punishment, it is hardly appropriate to call it, with such certainty, child abuse. What if the child did indeed deserve punishment for a behavior that was more potentially dangerous than the spanking? Could this discipline save his life? Or even create a disincentive to much greater problems.

What if the boy punched a girl and knocked her down? What if he was caught stealing pills?

I agree the punishment was severe and I do not condone using a switch, however this is not an injury, it is a painful and unfortunate form of discipline.

So you believe that there is some possible legitimate reason to do that to a child?

Jesus Christ! WTF?

Those marks were made in anger, repeatedly, by someone unable to control himself and who is teaching the same violence to that kid.

After hearing a few more details on the news; I change my mind. This may have been abuse. Hearing that the child fears his father, and that there "is a spanking room" sounds like this may not be selective punishment, but a frequent form of brutal treatment.

Doesnt matter how 'often.'

It is a crime even once to leave that kind of physical damage on a child and to terrorize them that way.

Pretty much the same here...my mother swung a mean wooden spoon too. But no marks. And I dont believe that all 'spanking' is wrong.

But beating....that is abuse. And that kid has the marks to prove it.

Well he did leave those marks on the child. He admitted to that.

I am not going to judge someone through the media.

I don't care what Peterson admitted to or what the boy's parents say...no one here knows ALL the facts.

I will leave that up to the police/legal system.

And I consider him innocent until proven guilty IN A COURT OF LAW.

This habit of people deciding on a person's guilt through media reports is ridiculous to me.

I highly doubt they would want people deciding on their guilt were they in that situation.

Peterson already admitted he did it.

Unless his lawyer arranges a pre-trial deal with prosecutors, Peterson may very well plead no contest to the original charge. I wonder how much leeway a Texas judge has in cases of child abuse.

The Vikings have re-activated Peterson (they got hammered yesterday). Roger Goodell (NFL Czar) has now hired three females to formulate a league ethics policy.

This spanking was done with a thin switch (A thin branch from a tree), I've been walking through the woods and have been whipped accidentally with a branch let go from the person walking in front of me.

Yes even a light swat caused by walking into a switch can cause bleeding and whelps.

I don't know how hard he swat the kid, and it was a bit much, but abuse akin to locking a kid in a closet for a week or something like that, no. I just don't know if criminal abuse fits, I do think bad parenting and severe punishment applies. Too severe even, yes.

In addition to some males, or will they do this on their own?

I think indicting Peterson is ridiculous...I have no problem with a parent spanking his child on the butt with a switch or belt....It was done to me and all my friends growing up and we turned out pretty well.

Not only that, but almost all media outlets I've seen & heard use the term "tree branch", which insinuates something much worse than a 'switch'.

I don't approve of using switches, but I also don't approve of misleading information in a thinly veiled effort to form public opinion.

To the point of causing scratches/cuts and drawing blood? That is abuse.

NP, look at the pictures in post #83 (quoted from an earlier post). That is much more than simply getting the switch. The boy in those pictures is 4-years-old. There is no reason to strike a child so hard as to leave marks like that. And so many of them. He must have been out of control. I read those pictures were taken 4 days after the incident, so initially, they must have been much worse.

Based on the evidence, and reports that the child said "Daddy Peterson hit me on my face", if those truly are pictures of the child in question and the the boy made that statement, he absolutely should have been indicted.

Whatever was used was of sufficient substance to leave consistent long bruising that wrapped around the body. This wasn't a whispy little willow tip.

Those aren't the marks of a single whip of a tree whip. Those are repeated lashings by someone out of control with their anger.

What the hell did the kid do? Take the family car without permission? Hell, he is only 4 yrs old.
