U.S. confirms Islamic State planning infiltration of southern border

A senior Homeland Security (DHS) official confirmed to Congress on Wednesday that militants associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) are planning to enter the United States via the porous southern border.

Francis Taylor, under secretary for intelligence and analysis at DHS, told senators during a hearing that ISIL supporters are known to be plotting ways to infiltrate the United States through the border.

“There have been Twitter, social media exchanges among ISIL adherents across the globe speaking about that as a possibility,” Taylor told Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) in response to a question about “recent reports on Twitter and Facebook of messages that would urge infiltration into the U.S. across our southwestern border.”

BUT we've been assured that the border is protected more than ever and there is absolutely no foreseeable threat from IS here in the homeland.

I don't believe ANYTHING that comes out of Homeland Security without factual proof.

Homeland Security?

The Department of Paranoia.

And the NSA are the American Gestapo.

And anyone who looks iffy is wisked off to the U.S. concentration camp (Gitmo) or sent to a ship in international waters to be tortured or renditioned to a country that will do it for them.

Meanwhile, the President bombs any country he likes (whether Congress agrees or not) and the Federal Reserve is running the economy.

America is slowly becoming a horrible country.

I'm all about whatever we decide to do as long as it doesn't involve troops back in Iraq. If air bombing isn't the answer because people complain it does nothing, what else can we do? What else is stronger?

I like two options.

#1 nuke Iraq and parts of Syria

#2 Stay out of Iraq and Syria, it's their problem we're done, they wanna complain so hard then maybe they can do something for change.

You do realize the giant repercussions if we dropped a nuclear bomb would be right?

Irrelevant.

Simply because two administrations in a row underestimated the Al Qaeda threat does not mean that ISIS is automatically about to blow up Washington. Because Obama had an agenda of "I stopped racism" in an election does not mean that the US need start nuking the region as some have openly suggested...and let's include Iran because they will have the bomb any day now. And we never hear about how the terrorists came to live among you\even after being under suspicion at one time, take flying lessons in your schools while taking months to study your security....

Sooner or later a frightened populace needs to take a look at the real evidence and decide whether living in a military state is worth it.

Syria/Iraq is not a security issue, it is purely political, staging for the mid terms, with the hawks trying to make Obama a dove, and Obama trying to make it look like he knows where to take a dump.

Fact - more people die EVERY year on US highways than all the foreign terrorists deaths of civilians.
Fact - NOT ONE terrorist has ever successfully penetrated US security.
Fact - there have been more deaths through domestic security than foreign
Fact - 14 years of continuous warfare, half of it on two fronts, an aggressive drone killing campaign and billions in aid to stop terrorism and the problem is worse.

So, let's do more of what we've been doing.

Totally true.

I realize repercussions as well as benefits.

I realize the repercussions are going to vastly outweigh the benefits. Rather not open up the can of snakes again...

Well, lets see....

Approximately 500,000 people sneak into the US annually, and about 85% across the US-Mexican border.

Now, if I am a terrorist do I:

1] try to sneak in aboard a container?
2] try to fly in?
or 3] walk across with a few dozen Mexicans.

I'll go with door number 3 Alex!

Unless you are a moron, you would take door number 2!! Only right wing fear mongering would ever lead one to believe otherwise. There are literally millions of people flying in and out of the US every year, far more than the number of people who attempt to cross the border. As long as the person isn't carrying the tools with which they will attack on their person, why would they have trouble getting into the country?

I'll buy your facts # 1, 3 & 4. #2 isn't credible and even "U.S. Security" would not make that claim.

So you see two options? Do nothing or.....or..... or kill every living person in the region. :doh That is thoughtful and intelligent analysis. Do you understand that you are talking about genocide of actual human beings, correct? Human beings whose lives have already been terribly impacted by American actions. That is not enough for you though, now we need to nuke them!! Astonishing.

We should do everything we can within reason to secure ourselves domestically but... the odds of being a victim of terrorism in the U.S. is almost nil. 9/11 was a terrible, terrible failure and we have to make sure nothing massive like that can ever happen again. There's always going to be a chance some lone cell or wolf can sneak in and bomb a crowded event, or go nilly willy with machine guns somewhere. However there are many things far more dangerous and likely to occur to the common American. Worrying about it or throwing excessive amounts of resources towards security isn't a very productive investment.

Totally true.

Quick now, what is the difference between threat level yellow and threat level orange?

If you can answer that you are among about 1% of the American population and not in wealth, I suspect otherwise you would have far superior entertainment to this.

I recently cleaned out some old books and came across Orwell's, 1984...and how they had threat levels or whatever they called them, only ever-changing enemies interchanged with allies, and the ministry of Truth that re-wrote recent history...while the ministry of Information created propaganda.

As I read, I had no trouble placing that script over top the USA of today, simply change a few names, like Ministry of Information to Homeland Security.

Then I read Machiavelli's "The Prince"......the guarantee of power, sometimes passed between rivals, through the deliberate creation of 'fear, uncertanty and doubt' which the Prince declares the essence of keeping the populace "orderly and manageable".

Odd, even though reading classical literature, I had no sense of the historical, more the hysterical.

Yes it is astonishing isn't it, having lost all hope for the residents in the ME.

What are the benefits exactly? Are they the same benefits the Nazis saw in wiping out the Jews?

Jews and Nazis is irrelevant. The Jews didn't demolish important buildings in Germany, causing thousands to die instantly.

The ME is nothing but a cluster****.

The only thing I ever wished we could do was go back in time and never kick Saddam off the throne.

Wasn't it great to see an administration be honest to congress?
We didn't get too much of that last administration did we?
Yes--this is what hope and change looks like--transparent and honest .
Nah,they'll just poopoo it like every other out-of-the-ordinary thing that
comes up.

You want to kill tens of millions of innocent people because you are obviously (IMO) paranoid about ISIS - a group with no air power and (apparently) only about 7-10,000 troops in Iraq.

If there was an award for the most ridiculous post so far this month on this site...please point it out to me so I can cast my vote for your above post.

And absolutely ridiculous ideas like this are why I don't take you very seriously.

Make your own vote?

Is this the post you want to vote for or the post where I said 1 million Iraqis aren't even worth a single American soldier?

Indeed. And the left rolls out Orwell when it suites the meme and the right rolls him out when it suits theirs and they both trivialise the others. Which is why I always maintain that a partisan is part of the problem. Otherwise I can't tell if Orwell was a prophet or whether US leadership has mistaken his work for a manual. Either way we've trouble on our hands.

Well your last point is shining!

What will all of the DP liberal/progressive naysayers from a few weeks ago going to say ?

And which border did the 9/11 terrorists come over ?

Which administration gave those terrorist visas ? Which political party changed our immigration and visa laws that allowed these terrorist to be given visas ? Which administration was in charge of the former INS, U.S. Customs at the port of entry when these terrorist entered the USA ?
Who opposed enforcing our immigration laws like interior enforcement and hunting down illegal aliens and deporting them ? All of the terrorist except one were illegal aliens. The minute your visa expires, you are an illegal alien.

Lets not forget it was political correctness that allowed all of the terrorist to board those three aircraft on the morning of 9-11-01.

That this administration was honest enough to admit this, something we didn't get to see from Cheney and co. last decade .

This isn't the first time he's advocated for nuclear annihilation of that entire region of the world. He's said he has taken the repercussions into consideration; I've seen no evidence that's actually true.
