BUT we've been assured that the border is protected more than ever and there is absolutely no foreseeable threat from IS here in the homeland.

(CNN) -- ISIS has Americans worried. Two-thirds of those surveyed in a recent Pew Research poll said they consider the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria to be a "major threat" to this country. But are such fears really justified?
Despite the impression you may have had from listening to U.S. officials in recent weeks, the answer is probably not really.

Depends what one means by "threat". A direct threat and a threat to interests are different things. Anyone that doesn't believe ISIS is threat to Western interests is living in a cave.

Re: U.S. confirms Islamic State planning infiltration of southern border

    Good grief

There is absolutely nothing new about this. No nation can hermetically seal its borders. Sealing the US border that thoroughly is practically impossible.

And in case anyone needs reminding, the 9/11 attackers did not cross the border illegally. Neither did the Boston Marathon bombers. Or Tim McVeigh. Or the Unabomber.

    Not to mention that....

    1) The number of Americans killed by terrorists in a given year around the globe is extremely small.
    2) Islamic State is about to be bombed halfway out of existence by the US, hopefully followed up by some local soldiers on the ground.
    3) No elected official could prevent IS, or any other terrorist group, from crossing the border. I.e. turning this into a partisan thing, for those tempted to do so, is delusional.

Don't get me wrong, IS needs to be dealt with. But being terrified that they are going to cross the Mexican Border is just silly.

I'd bet that on 9/10/2000, most Americans werent really concerned about Al Qaida. Hell...I'd bet on 9/10/2001, most Americans werent concerned they represented a real threat.

I'm not surprised people today dont see them as a threat.

I would agree with you there. With respect to the op, it would be a direct threat. IS operations in the ME are going to be more in your "threat to interests" category.

I don't think anybody denies that IS is a threat in some form or fashion.
