They helped the Afghan people fight the invading Russians. Americans have helped protect weaker nations from stronger invaders in the past, and have been thanked for it.

We'll yes, you would be here regularly arguing with me that the US hasn't been supporting militant Islamic groups, and then change your argument to say yeah, that's what we do to help the weak. You never have had credibility here and still do not.

. OH, BUT LET THE APOLOGISTS TELL IT, AND THEY WERE MODERATES, HOW NICE.

This goes precisely with my long term position, that you don't weaken, diminish, degrade or destroy militant Islamic groups, by supporting them and removing figures like Hussein, Mubarak, Gaddafi and Assad that gave them no quarters. You can't have it both ways. But you go right on and continue supporting failed policies.

There were multiple sources of funding of various groups in the "mujahideen". And as I pointed out already, the one who is so often pointed out as the guy we created, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, was sitting on his ass in Iran when AQ and the Taliban were working up the 9/11 attacks.

BUT we've been assured that the border is protected more than ever and there is absolutely no foreseeable threat from IS here in the homeland.
Hold the phone, kids! Didn't the Pentagon or someone a few weeks ago sat that there was not an ISIS threat from our borders?
If that's the case, then this administration once again contradicited itself.

The means to infiltrate are by influencing the weakest people who are already citizens of the country. To stop such influencing you need to communicate, cooperate, and reach out to more of the citizens so as to stop ISIS propaganda from brainwashing the isolated ones. Teaching everyone critical thinking could also help, for no one in their right mind would betray their country, risk their lives, and join the barbarians.

Yes, and as I pointed out, as a matter of policy, support of the extremists was favored over support of moderates as has been the claim both about A-Stan and more recently Syria.

I can play the Wikipedia game too!

The early foundations of al-Qaida were allegedly built in part on relationships and weaponry that came from the billions of dollars in U.S. support for the Afghan mujahadin during the war to expel Soviet forces from that country.[10] However, scholars such as Jason Burke, Steve Coll, Peter Bergen, Christopher Andrew, and Vasily Mitrokhin have argued that Bin Laden was "outside of CIA eyesight" and that there is "no support" in any "reliable source" for "the claim that the CIA funded bin Laden or any of the other Arab volunteers who came to support the mujahideen."[11][12][13][14]

The same ISI that gave its backing to the Taliban.

We should have been supporting Ahmed Shah mossud of the northern alliance.

I agree, and we were backing him. I said earlier that the biggest sin of the US involvement in Afghanistan was in pulling up stakes and leaving the moderate factions to twist in the wind after the Soviets withdrew.
