You are a victim of that propaganda and never knew a time when all Americans were genuinely proud of their country and the future they could make for following generations. Now any mistakes "America" makes are highlighted, promoted, and endlessly debated, while the actions of those who would do America harm are downplayed, dismissed as America's fault, or ignored.

If the American experiment fails no good can follow, but the present generation of Americans have little understanding of this possibility and its consequences.
Again, the left doesn't hate America, and the right doesn't hate America. Dissent isn't hate no matter how much you want to make that connection. You probably wouldn't understand this, but Americans want America to be good. The conflict is in the differences of opinion in what good is, ideology and all.

Our national stance towards Cuba is stupid beyond words. The last time that Cuba ever presented any kind of threat was in October 1963, and Kennedy took care of that...and why we still have an embargo is beyond me. We have had open relations - and even strongly supported - dictatorships that were far worse than Castros ever were (like Pakistan, for example).

If we really want to bring Cuba out of communism, the solution's easy - open up our capitalist markets to them, just as we did for the Soviet Union. Bring capitalism to Cuba, and while it's possible the Castros may not fall, their communist system certainly will.
Ahem, 1962. I don't think Pakistan's government has been worse than Cuba's, but I agree with your larger point. Our most powerful weapon against Cuba would be WalMart. None of that, however, excuses the ideologically-driven treasonous behavior cited by the FBI.

The Crumbling of the Middle Eastern Secularists

Starting with Suddam Hussein during the early part of the turn of the century the secular bulwarks of the Middle East began to crumble. In late 2010 the Arab Spring kicked off a wave of anti-government demonstrations that led to the downfall of four powerful Middle Eastern autocrats while leaving the last prominent few embattled. At the time, many in the West hailed the Arab Spring as a triumph for democracy and freedom for a region that has seen little of either. What many people failed to realize however was that these leaders, Qaddafi, Mubarak, Ben Ali, Saleh and even Assad were all secular leaders who had little tolerance for radical Islam.

Re: Cuban intelligence agencies recruit leftist professors

Guys, this is nothing new, even by the FBI's public releases. The report is based on the testimonials of a former Cuban intelligence service member who published his work in 2002 or 2003. The FBI has, for years, discussed the risks associated with international communications and academia. In 2011 the FBI released a document detailing the risks for all nation-states. Academics are frequently used by the academic's home government for input on governmental research and projects. This makes them great targets, and always has. It's not because academia has more left-wing persons. It's because they provide a valuable service.

    Ways to get academics:

    1) Appeal to academic's political views. This is what the Free Beacon release discussed. However, this is neither isolated to Cuba or left-wing governments. This is for any government seeking information.

    2) Appeal to academic's ethnic or national identity. This is not discussed by the release. This is for any foreign nation-state.

    3) Promise the academic access to desirable or needed source material for their research. This was not discussed by the release. This is for any nation-state.

    4) Pose as an academic colleague seeking input on research. This was not discussed by the release. This is for any nation-state.

    5) Pose as an academic entity that will promote the researcher's work. This was not discussed by the release. This is for any nation-state. An academic presents material to an academic audience, which is an expected career builder, a networking opportunity, and a means to improve the knowledge of the field. Posing as a conference will allow a nation-state to get at an academic's knowledge and/or allow them to appeal to an academic via their political views, prior national status, or their ethnicity.

    6) While posing as an innocent party, secure information covertly. This was not discussed by the release. This is for any nation-state. When a nation-state is interested in the academic's work, they can lure them to a safe area, and while they are away, the nation-state can secure information by stealing content in that person's possession.

Nonsense, nobody mentioned appeasement, I said containment, which, Hussein, Mubarak, Gaddafi and Assad were doing quite well.

The only ones I saw hailing the "Arab Spring" as a triumph were those like you that were trying to pat Obama's appeasement on the back in the region. Now that it is clear that the MB, and that whole mess there was a huge failure, you magically want to make everyone forget that voices like yours were the ones actually cheering the uprising, and calling for Mubarak's head.
