Ku Klux Klan - Facts & Summary - HISTORY.com
The article details the three "surges" in the KKK during the 1870's, 1920's and 1960's.
Are we in the midst of a historical trend and the 4th surge?
I've never had any use for the "radical Republicans", who had no use for President Lincoln and vice-versa.
Lincoln even had to form his own National Union party in 1864 to break from them.
One can only imagine a President Lincoln running Reconstruction instead of the "radical Republicans".
The causes of the first surge sound eerily familiar to what I see today, though today's "possible surge" is no longer centralized in the South.
We constantly see threads today defending secession.
Unfortunately for Southerners in the past, the KKK has been based there as well as in Indiana,
and this post in no way indicts Southerners nor Hoosiers of any era for this.
The peak of the second surge during the 1920's movement, reaching over 4 million for an all-time high,
has its roots in opposing Roman Catholics, Jews, immigration and organized labor.
Sound familiar?
The third peak during the 1960's had its roots in opposing civil rights, once again an issue today.
The scary thing to me is that the reasons for all three surges seem to be coming together today in a "perfect storm".
One that I believe started with President Clinton who was derided as the first "Black" President back then.
And once again, in no way does this post try to lay blame to any political persuasion for the KKK,
though my posting history on this issue is not without flame.
During times like these, I reach back to my all-time favorite movie, Remember the Titans.
I almost feel like renting it again and breaking it down like football film, that's how great every scene is.
As a retired Chem/Physics teacher and Air Force brat, I feel fortunate to have been able to live a multi-cultural/non-sexist life .
