Actually, getting away from law enforcement is probably the best thing to happen to them. I swear they should all just walk off the job since almost nobody gives a **** about what happens to them anyway.
Sorry but I disagree with you--using the context of the OP, of course.

What is needed is more hard core, intensive training followed by a more attractive salary for what police do. Only top quality people should be police officers and the training should weed out the undesirables.

With those two miserable excuses for cops, you are right. Nobody should give a **** what happens to them.

Oh you're right. They get paid so much that completely makes up for the contempt most people have for them. What gets me is there is apparently no minimum level conduct you all think cops should be treated with. Some guy spits on them, they better ****ing allow it with a smile because anything else is them being criminals themselves.

Incidentally, if posting something angry on social media is criminal conduct, there are a lot of criminals on this very forum (shoot, I break that law pretty nearly every day).
The idea that there is "zero appreciation" for police officers is just ****ing stupid.

Hard to have much respect or concern for faceless entities dressed like Darth Vader and point guns at you and threaten to '****ing kill you'. But maybe you find them sympathetic figures.

Both decisions were good decisions. Police officers do not own the community. They work FOR the community, and the community is the boss, not them. I know that tensions have been running high in Ferguson, but if you threaten to kill people, then you do not deserve to wear a badge under ANY circumstances. End of discussion....... Or is it?

I've been on police forums, and the notion that the community is "the boss" always gets a good chuckle from the leo members there.

Seems kind of self evident that police officers have all the cards in any given situation. They even have a very powerful union to protect them if they do anything wrong.

It's not "some people" who don't like cops. It's most people.
    Most people?

I think that's going to an extreme. Most people follow the law and appreciate it when the town they live in is safer at night or when officers do all the many things they need to like direct traffic after an accident, respond to an emergency call.

Which is the core of the problem. Not all - but far too many - cops act like invaders and not part of the community they're supposed to serve. It's dangerous and it doesn't reduce crime.

The people are sovereign in this country. Government -including the police - exist to serve the sovereign. We get into trouble because we forget that.

Most people do appreciate the protection of law officers.

However, most of the people who protest government actions by looting and vandalizing property don't appreciate police officers for some reason.

I'm generally a great supporter of the various law enforcement entities that keep people safe and able to live normal lives. That's only possible, however, when bad actors are weeded out without delay or excuse. There are bad actors in every profession and walk of life and second chances can be offered, but not in a profession where a gun and a taser are standard equipment and civilian lives are at risk. Whomever the Chief of Police is who made the decisions should be congratulated.
