'Cops' crew member dies after officer-involved shooting | Local News - KETV Home

OMAHA, Neb. —A television show crew member seriously hurt in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night has died, according to a source close to the investigation.

Authorities said the incident began as an armed robbery at the Wendy's near 43rd and Dodge streets around 9:20 p.m. An officer-involved shooting then occurred, according to police. Officials said the armed robbery suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
A "Cops" TV show crew member was also seriously wounded. A source close to the investigation told KETV NewsWatch 7 that the crew member has since died. "Cops" has been filming in Omaha for much of the summer.

No other suspects were being sought by police, and no officers were hurt. Police Chief Todd Schmaderer and the mayor's communication director were at the scene.

Not too much information yet on the details but it's too bad someone got killed in the crossfire. My thoughts with the family.

Police chief: 'Officers had no choice' but to respond in the manner they did | Local News - KETV Home

OMAHA, Neb. —[2:41 p.m. UPDATE] Omaha police say three officers had no choice but to respond the way they did to an armed robbery at a fast-food restaurant Tuesday night that left the suspect and a television crew member dead.

More At a news conference Wednesday, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer identified the armed robbery suspect as Cortez Washington, 32. He was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the Nebraska Medical Center.

One 'Cops' television crew member accompanying a responding officer was also struck by gunfire and later died. He was identified as Bryce Dion, 38.

---

Omaha police said the incident began as an armed robbery at the Wendy's restaurant near 43rd and Dodge streets.

Det. Darren Cunningham called for backup around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Officers Brooks Riley and Jason Wilhelm, who were accompanied by a two-member crew with 'Cops,' immediately responded.

Police said the three officers entered the restaurant, and three witnesses confirmed that Washington was holding a handgun and discharged it in the direction of Officers Cunningham and Riley.

Officers Cunningham, Riley and Wilhelm returned fire, striking Washington. Washington left the restaurant and collapsed outside.

Dion was also struck by gunfire as Washington ran from the scene. Dion later died from his injuries.

Schmaderer said the shooting was captured on video by the production crew, and it has been entered into evidence. Schmaderer said he has personally reviewed the video and determined "officers had no choice but to respond in the manner in which they did."

It was later determined the gun Washington had was an Airsoft gun. Schmaderer said it looked like and sounded like a real handgun.

A grand jury will review the evidence, Schmaderer said.

The three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid-administrative leave, as is standard policy in officer-involved shootings.

So the suspect was just shooting with an airsoft gun at the police who then had no choice but to return fire and now an innocent man is dead. So sad.

I couldn't fault police on this, seconds are dear at such a moment, and some of those look remarkably like a real firearm. A sad event indeed.

What a moron though for shooting at the police when you got caught robbing a Wendys. Was that frosty and maybe a couple hundred dollars really worth yourself and another person getting killed over??

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those who lost their lives.

I can't, however, let it pass without saying that I'll be waiting for someone to suggest that the officer should have been using a taser instead of a gun, so that the poor armed robber didn't have to die.

The same argument might be addressed to those who continue to talk about how that "gentle giant" Michael Brown only stole a pack of cigars.

If you're in the process of committing an armed robbery and I see a red muzzle on your weapon it won't mean much of anything to me......that is even if you didn't cover the red to make it look more real. How do I know you didn't just paint some red nail polish on the muzzle of a real pistol to make it look fake?

Oh no, not at all. Who ever accused criminals of being smart, lol. It really sucks for the innocent in this. Sure the cops feel bad on this one too. Following cops around prosecuting their duties can be somewhat like following soldiers around doing the same. Hope those Cops guys get hazard pay.

Don't be pointing a gun or anything that looks like a gun at a cop, or at someone else, in front of a cop. Even if you were right (though I'm not sure how that could ever be) you're still dead!

No, really it couldn't. The "gentle giant" you refer to didn't commit armed robbery.

You're confusing events. Nobody will be saying such a thing, so don't hold your breathe or do a food fast waiting.

No, really it couldn't. The "gentle giant" you refer to didn't commit armed robbery.

But he died because he didn't want to get arrested for stealing a pack of cigars - same stupid decision making.

"COPS" is still being filmed? Really?

Really hate to hear this. My thoughts go out to all those affected by it.
