So, the "gentle giant" robs a store and roughs up the owner (I'm sure in a very gentle fashion though), then walks in the middle of the road, causing traffic problems. When the cop shows up, he attacks him.
Was this a suicide by cop situation? Seems the guy was trying to force a confrontation with police, with no intention of going quietly.

You have your mind made up that a 6 year decorated veteran of the force, with NO, NOT ONE disciplinary action ever taken against this officer, so tell me. Why would he do this? If what you are projecting here is indeed what comes out? A repressed racist that couldn't hold it in any longer and snapped when Brown attacked him? What?
