Bullying husbands face jail under new proposals by Theresa May

I am kind of amazed by this thread.

It sounds like many in this thread think that either mental and emotional abuse is okey dokey or who the hell cares...it can't be proven so move on.

So, no one is concerned that this exists? No one wonders if this is happening to someone you know and love and can be stopped?

I have no idea. However, I think some bullies are very good at hiding their bullying -- and in many cases, abusive -- behaviors until after the wedding takes place and the women are legally bound to them. Then, of course, it is too late for the woman to simply walk away. She's legally stuck with the guy, and it's even worse for her if she has one or more kids with him.

Another great reason to remain single and childfree; not having to deal with such a nightmare on a daily basis.

here, here!

I'm glad it applies to both genders but on it's surface, to me it's just an excuse for women to accept victimization...or to make such victimization acceptable.

I don't think you've read this thread correctly. Or made assumptions about things that just isn't there. No one here thinks that mental and emotional abuse is "okey dokey". Most here that have commented on it are simply saying that proving it is extremely hard to do. Commenting that such abuse as being hard to prove does not equal it being "okey dokey". Others have also commented on the fact that this proposal seems to only focus on women being abused and ignores men being abused. But no one has even slightly suggested that it is "okey dokey".

okay, it was just a bizarre thread to read through....many of the men whining and crying what about me, what about me...and a few threads blaming the victim...

Its a valid question. A law based on one gender and not the other is a discriminatory law. And no law should ever be discriminatory. And a woman abusing her husband does happen. Yeah, its rare comparatively speaking, but it does happen.

The original linked article, which pretty much nobody bothered to read it seems, clearly states that the law applies equally in the other direction as well.

Having said that, I wouldn't put money on it being applied equally.

Yeah I saw that. Problem is....I don't believe it.

Although the new domestic abuse offence is mainly designed to protect wives and girlfriends from male partners who intimidate them, it will apply equally to men being targeted by women. The Home Office said 16 per cent of men admit to being victims of domestic abuse during their lifetimes compared with 30 per cent of women, according to research.

Sorry but when they say that "it is mainly designed to protect wives and girlfriends from male partners" you just have this gut feeling that the male half of that law was just put in there for appeasement and will rarely if ever be applied.

I agree with your assessment 100%, and almost said the same thing.
