WASHINGTON — A video by Islamic State militants released Tuesday shows the beheading of American journalist James Foley, say U.S. officials. The extremists called the killing retribution for U.S. airstrikes in Iraq. Foley’s family posted a statement on a Facebook page that was created to rally support for his release, saying they “have never been prouder of him.”

Foley, a 40-year-old freelance journalist from Rochester, New Hampshire, went missing nearly two years ago in northern Syria while on assignment for Agence France-Press and the Boston-based media company GlobalPost.

At the end of the video, a militant shows a second man, who was identified as another American journalist, Steven Sotloff, and warns that he could be killed. Sotloff was kidnapped near the Syrian-Turkish border in August 2013 and freelanced for Time, the National Interest and MediaLine.

It begins with scenes of Obama explaining his decision to order airstrikes in Iraq. Then it switches to a balding man in an orange jumpsuit kneeling in the desert, a black-clad Islamic State fighter by his side. Foley’s name appears in both English and Arabic graphics on screen.

So... yeah.

They have at least 1 more american in their grasps and they don't care about such things like freedom of the press or the fact that the americans in question aren't officials, they don't represent the USA, they just represent themselves... but they're americans, and more to the point, they're infidels... so they have to die.

And there are at least 20 more journalists missing.

This is ofc, just 1 more in a long line of executions that have been done by ISIS. There are countless reports, some posted here on this forum too, about how they've executed 700 of these people, 100 of those people, 1000 over there... etc.

Btw, the guy who did the execution is a muslim who left from britain to join the jihad, one of about 3000 according to latest confirmed figures and the number of people who join the jihad are growing, it's not slowing down.
EDIT: 3000 muslims from all over Europe, not from Britain alone. From britain it was like 500-600 if I'm not mistaken. From france about 800-1000, etc.

I saw the video on LiveLeak. Just awful. It showed the very beginning and then skipped to the aftermath, but not the actual act.

These folks don't care about life, or anything for that matter. Just for them to be in power and force their religion on the world.

This will not have the effect ISIL desires. I can see it steeling the will of the Administration and Congress to ramp up pressure on it.
 
If we attack, it makes them madder & incites other likeminded people. If we don't attack, it inspires them to do crazier ****.
 
First of all, I thought that the journalist acted pretty damn brave. I think that if it was me on my knees in an Orange Jumpsuit (which is what the U.S. used in Guantanamo and Abu Gharib), I would of been whimpering like a lost dog and begging to live.

But, I also think that these fighters view Western journalists as CIA assets because of so many instances in the past where this has been proven to be true. The same could be said for the NGO's which are funded by the CIA.

Maybe these fighters view Western journalists as "Enemy Combatants" and without a drone, or a cluster bomb, they used other tools.

Dead is dead!

Whether beheaded or a victim of a drone strke and where the shrapnel of cluster bombs slice off every limb on your body.

This is just horrible. My thoughts go to James Foley's family and loved ones.

The western world needs to look at concerted and joined up thinking in how to rid the world of this threat - apparently even al-Qaida have distanced themselves from this group for their repeated atrocities.
 
Beyond disgusting, they are revolting animals.

I have no doubt that he knew the dangers involved in front-line journalism, his prior experiences and the fact he chose to continue is testament to that. No one ever said that stepping into a zone where no one else wants to go will be safe and easy. For some, the passion to carry on regardless, is stronger than most will ever understand. He was a brilliant journalist and being familiar with his fundraising efforts and reporting relating to the struggles of Aleppo's Dar al-Shifa hospital, this has been terrible news.

RIP James and condolences to his family and friends.

I saw the same video Beau, and in between crying and shaking, I didn't know what to do. It's going to haunt me forever. My heart goes out to his family.

Those people are maniacal bastards, and on the verge of being sub-human.
 
Why even watch the video? Our media outlets here aren't showing it and i'm not searching for it on the internet. I won't give those pigs the satisfaction.

That's what these ****heads want you do.....They want to **** with you and get in your head.

The actual footage is terrible and gruesome, it shows them sawing off his head.....as I have stated again and again. Everybody should be about taking these jerks out.

The CIA or some other initialed Dept....or even a paid assassin should be used. To Bring us the one who committed the Act and the one who gave the order, from the so called invisible sheik.

So these clowns know we can reach out and touch them at anytime.....including when they are home with their Jihadi women, sons and daughters. Even when they are in their Mosque and praying.

Right now a price should be put on every head of an ISIS member by the international community IMO. ISIS is a threat to all the world, maybe not directly right now but with some having western passports etc it couold become a real issue.

IIRC the one in the video that did the beheading was British sounding and could hold a passport there.

Moreover last week.....AQ Prime sent word to BO offering to negotiate for another American. Which I have that up in the War on Terror Forum.

The method of fighting ISIS is right in front of us, they project their weakness, but we seem unable to exploit it. ISIS is a death cult with a very particular spiritual dogma that governs whether or not they will get into heaven. When you challenge those beliefs by killing them in a manner that ensures -- in their minds -- that they won't go to heaven their will starts to crumble. We have already seen this happening on the Kurdish front.

Among their exploitable weaknesses:

1) If you are killed by a woman you don't go to heaven. The Kurdish army has units of only female fighters that ISIS has a real hard time dealing with because suddenly facing women who are killing them they lose feeling of invulnerability. We can exploit this by sending in female Navy pilots to bomb ISIS positions and let them know it was women killing them.

2) The well known belief of the dying unclean send you to hell can be easily exploited.

3) They believe that being decapitated robs you of heaven. We may need to exploit this.

4) They believe that being burn denies you heaven. Refuse to bury their dead as they lose ground. Instead burn them on piers in plain sight.

When you do this you rob them of their sense of invulnerability.

Don't see how unless you also want to create a bunch of psycopaths. It's one thing to shoot someone it's another to get up and close to cut off their head while they are still alive. You have to have seriously disconnected persons to do this and re-integrating them into society afterwords is going to be a real problem.

I think the media may have incorrectly assessed these people. I don't really like them if they cut people's heads off. Seems far too medieval to me. Thought the human race had evolved beyond this sort of thing. I guess that only applies to some and not others.

Heya EB. :2wave: I don't know about Freedom Fighters.....but we do need to start going after these Reporters and destroying their careers. All those that keep calling them Militants and Jihadis when referring to the Terrorists. They are Terrorists....nothing else and nothing more. A Diseased Animal than needs not be around the rest of the flock.

That's the Word they are looking to avoid using. Terrorists!
 
Real journalism can be risky. This man and the others who have lost their lives or have been taken captive in search for the truth should be honored for their courage and sacrifice.

Apparently, ISIS doesn't realize they're supposed to follow the Geneva Conventions or read captured journalists their Mirandas or something. Maybe if we give them finger painting lessons?
