Obama's vacations and golf outings, by the numbers

Actually, yes the vacations ARE an issue. You seem to think it is ok for Congress to leave but not Obama. Done being a mouthpiece for the GOP yet son?

How many times does it have to be repeated. It's not the vacations it's the optics of heading straight to the golf course and being seen laughing and smiling just after mourning a beheading at the press conference. And yes it's okay for congress to leave on regularly scheduled recesses. It's part of how congress is supposed to operate. They do need to spend some time in their own districts. And last time I checked, they were not in a press conference about a beheading or headed straight to a golf course just afterward.

I thought so. It seemed that Bush was always on vacation, or just got back from vacation, or preparing to go on vacation. But the actual days taken is more important that the # of vacations, IMO. You could take 50 vacations of two days each = 100 days. But then someone else could take 15 vacations of 10 days each = 150 days.

They all should be in DC - both Houses, both parties. That's why Congressional reps need to be in term for longer than 2 years (doG strike me for posting that). This is the cycle every 2 years. Now they're all out tryingto save their jobs, along with 1/3 of the Senate.

Obama didn't take any more "vacation" (such as it is) than any other President, just like Bush, contrary to what Michael Moore and Wapo said, was never really on vacation either.

Damn with everything going on in the world right now I can't believe people are arguing 24 pages worth of something so damned dumb.

The one thing the military taught me was that perception can be everything. We were taught to be careful on our actions that could be perceived in a different and uglier way. Punishments in the military can be done simply off bad perceptions. And most of all, just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD do something.

Can the President go on vacation and STILL be in touch with his advisors? Absolutely. However, the perception this president is giving is that he simply doesn't care about what is going on in the world. That perception is one of weakness when it is looked by dictators, tyrants, and terrorists. Actions by others can then be done simply by that perception.

Right now is not the time to be going on vacation for ANY of the members of congress or the president if only to show the world we are united instead of divided and impotent which is what the world is seeing from our leaders. Right now IMO, we are projecting weakness and our enemies are acting on that perceived weakness from us.

I am amused at all of the progressives on this forum who are attempting to divert the discussion from the insensitivity Obama displayed by heading to the golf course straight from an emotional press conference on an American's beheading. This is not about vacation. It's about a president foolish enough to not consider the optics of smiling and laughing away at a golf course right after a press conference on a beheading.

#1: I'm not a progressive.

#2: Bush was on vacation when Katrina hit, despite him and everyone in the nation knowing that a "perfect storm" was about to hit. He also didn't cut his vacation short right away. It was a while. And then it was to do a fly-over (the now infamous picture of Bush looking out his plane window from "above the fray" representing his dissociation from the rest of the people in the country.

Fact is Katrina at a Category 1 storm hit Florida Thursday into Friday, when it got to Category 3 on Saturday Bush declared a federal state of emergency for Louisiana and putting into action FEMA. That was prior to Katrina hitting New Orleans. Please try and refrain from providing incorrect information due to partisan views.

As I said, Bush was on vacation while Katrina was on its way to certain destruction of a part of the country. And was late in cutting his vacation short...it took some public questioning about it before that happened.

Speaking as someone who has lived on the US gulf coast in one of the disaster areas for 25 years(not New Orleans), no. There was absolutely nothing any president could have done to prevent damage from the hurricane. The vast majority of immediate help comes from first responders who are state and local. There are also laws that can prevent a president from making an immediate difference. Example.....the chaos in New Orleans. Bush did immediately activate the Coast Guard which saved hundreds of lives. However he could have saved many more lives if the Governor(democrat Ann Blanco) had not prevented him from taking control of the state's national guard. I am sure jumpin jack has heard of the Posse Comitatus Act.
