[RIP]Robin Williams Dead at 63 [W:194:238]

Re: Robin Williams committed suicude.

Some interesting points I have read in the last 24 hours about how we are mourning the loss. Someone in the Mental Health field pointed this out (paraphrase):

"When ever you hear a person refer to a suicide as the person is 'now at peace' or that they are now 'free' just stop for a minute and contemplate how this sounds to a person who is currently contemplating suicide."I have to admit it gave me pause, and I have probably used both of those phrases in the last 48 hours.

Excellent point.

Just thought I'd pass this along in case it hasnt already been posted.

Re: Robin Williams committed suicude.

Someone dedicated this song to Robin Williams on our local FM station today....

Not sure how relevant it is, I'm just glad they did. Great song and I had forgotten about it.

Re: Robin Williams committed suicude.

I was listening to talk radio today where they broached the topic I've never heard of before on this. Heart surgery patients have an astronomically large percent suicide rate being that depression is a side effect of cardiac surgery.

Anything major like that will affect you in weird ways. My husband had a stroke in January, and it has affected his demeanor. He's always been just funny, and laid-back. Now he loses his temper at the drop of a hat. The neurologist said that is normal, and should go away eventually.

*hugs* I didn't know that Superflygirl. I hope it goes away soon.

Yeah, well I'm Irish. I can handle 'im. ;)

But thanks!

God made the Irish #1.;) That's what my mother (100% Irish) always said.

I'm only half Irish, the other half German.

You can handle him!

There is also a fairly strong indication that people who have chronic depression, also tend to have cardiovascular disease, due to chemical changes and other related stressors. Emotional stress is extremely hard on your physical wellbeing. It's one of the things which leads me to ask, which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Does the depression cause physical state conducive to heart disease, or does heart disease have a hand in causing depression. It is difficult for me to make a good guess, because in spite of my intermittent periods of severe depression since my late 30's, I have no indicators of cardiovascular disease- at least none as of now, 20 years later.

Makes me wonder why, when people point a gun at you, they never say "Don't move or I'll send you to a better place!"

Wow. Just saw the RW was in the early stages of Parkinsons...

Robin Williams was struggling with early stages of Parkinson's disease when he died, his wife said. His "sobriety was intact," she said

I tend to think the depression comes first because it generally begins in your childhood. Many commentators who know nothing of the subject suggested (in Williams case) that it was the stress of celebrity, etc. because they feel the need for an obvious explanation. But we don't know what went on in his childhood, the sorrows he carried with him, the dark pain in the secret world only he inhabited. It is a lonely disease, but those who seek help will soon learn that it is a disease, and that they are not alone.

Wow. My friend who is only in his mid thirties had a stroke year before last. He said it made him really angry when it was happening. Don't know how much it changed his overall demeanor.

With robin I'd venture to guess that perhaps the drug binges in the 70's and 80's might have weakened his cardiovascular system to where stress and such would have a greater impact on it maybe... And then cardio breakdown and depression. I got really down when I had a sever bout with a kidney stone that had me tied up for about a month waiting on surgery. I began to get agorophbic and depressed. And also pissed because Im a pretty fit guy and I was angry that my body was letting me down.

This is what a physician told me that people who self medicate actually make their depression worse, because they do physical damage to their bodies and brains.

It makes sense. Especially the long term effects that abuse of speed would have on the cardiovascular system.

Age, Parkinson's, Depression, cardiovascular, substance abuse can all have dramatic and accumulative impacts on brain functioning.

My father had a stroke and became more emotional afterwards.

I've heard about people sometimes getting more emotional after strokes. Did he fully recover?

No, he lived with half his body paralyzed for 16 years. But he did gain more control over his emotions, never 100% though. His ability to think didn't change, nor his personality.

If you have a chance and if you haven't already done so, check out this book...

My stroke of insight.
A brain scientists personal journey.

About a brain scientist who studied the brain and strokes then had one. She knew it immediately as it happened and she describes the occurrence and recovery in great detail. The brain is so amazing in its ability to do work arounds.

Yea, sometimes I think that my brain did a workaround by tying itself into my ass. LOL.
