[RIP]Robin Williams Dead at 63 [W:194:238]

As a rule, the person who is truly suicidal, is not in a rational state of mind.

I used to get many 3am calls from my sister. (Severe Bipolar) She was tormented with suicidal thoughts and attempted among other things a butcher knife to the neck and tried to climb out of the car while we were going 65 on the freeway.

You are right about irrational thinking. Those delusional thoughts are very real for someone that's afflicted. Managing her medication was a daily struggle. The side effects often cause the patient to stop taking them. Then all bets are off.

I just watched RV a week ago. So sad. Rest in peace, Robin. You will be missed.

Yes- one of our most basic of instincts is self-preservation. When that instinct isn't working well, it's pretty indicative that there's a serious emotional issue going on. For someone who has never been there, it is near-impossible to understand. One of the best examples of that was my husband. The years when I was having some serious emotional problems, he could never understand it, nor identify with it. He didn't take it seriously, or think it was "real". In the last year that he lived, and specifically in the last 6 months, he was having some issues with depression, and I could tell by some of the things he was saying and talking about. I don't think he ever fully understood what was happening, until then. It was then, that he realized how seriously messed up a person can be in their mind, and still function in the regular world, and I think he truly felt terrible that he had never really taken me seriously about it.
It was honestly worse watching that happen to my husband, than it was living through it myself.

Re: Robin Williams committed suicude.

I must wonder if Robin would think it's too soon for a joke. I look forward to it, I think he'd want people to laugh.

Perhaps he stopped taking his meds.

Interesting you should say that. Jon Stewart talked about something to that effect when he made his first Daily Show appearance after 9/11, in which he was both crying and making jokes at the same time. He explained that as a comedian if too much time passed in which nobody was laughing he'd have to make a joke or he'd get deeply uncomfortable. So if you were to ask Robin if it was too soon to make a joke after another comedian's death, he'd probably respond by making a joke of his own.

As for the meds, David Wong's explanation points to their depression not being strictly or exclusively caused by anything chemical.

"Reality is just a crutch for people who can't handle drugs." - Robin Williams

Perhaps that joke was a warning.

In the spirit I think Robin would have appreciated, I have to ask...how are they gonna close the casket with all that chest hair?

Also, good morning vietnam was great.

Yes, I was watching a clip just this morning, and admiring that hair. Back in the day, men were hairy, and we liked it. Some of us still do.

The world has lost a great talent. My heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues. My adopted brother and bio sister committed suicide and I know that while his pain his over, that of his loved ones is just beginning. :(

Re: Robin Williams committed suicude.

A funny joke.

From me? Jokes on demand are above my pay grade. If I could do that I'd probably work as a comedian.

Edit: if I tried it would probably be as crappy as a351's.

Good Will Hanging.

Good Will Hanging.

Dude... way to soon.

Can I just say, I have rarely seen such antagonistic opinions in an RIP thread, and what's surprising about it is that the RIP thread is Robin Williams - a person who made probably all of us laugh at some point.

Probably because it was apparently a suicide. Some people just can't help but be judgmental about suicide.

Sucks ****.

RIP.

I don't get it, I really don't.

I'll admit that I am somewhat judgmental about suicide. I haven't and won't say anything disparaging about Williams, but suicide always confounds me, and that's because both of my parents died way too young, and both of them fought so hard against their diseases to try to stay alive, and didn't want to die, but did anyway. When I think about someone who intentionally takes his/her own life, I can't understand it, and then get a little, wee bit, I'll admit - resentful.

Please don't stomp me for saying that.

Of course I wouldn't stomp you. I will, however, say that I do understand where suicidal people are, mentally and emotionally. It makes no sense to the rational mind, which is why it is not easily understood.

Re: Robin Williams committed suicude.

He was a brilliant comedian, the best ever in my opinion, and an incredibly diverse actor. I can't really add to this thread, other than to say that his demons won, and my heart is broken. :(
