My thoughts are with his friends and family.

I just need to add another movie 'What dreams may come' love, love, love that movie and the overall message. So sad and touching yet a great story.

Didn't surprise me, as I knew he had substance and depression issues. Comics are often the most depressed among us. I know Jim Carey struggles with depression, too. It seems the more over-the-top quirky they are, the wilder the mood swings, too.

This one definitely hurts because I loved just about everything the man did.

I watched him as a kid, and I've watched with my kids. That's a life well led.

Loved it. Read it, and then read it again to my husband. Thanks for sharing.

And frankly, self medication (read alcohol and drugs) in people with mental health issues is very common.

Things could be bad for him if he was using....

But frankly, without the self medication things may be "worse". Worse in that one may feel all sorts of feelings that bring about hopelessness.

Not advocating self medication at all, just acknowledging self medication with drugs and alcohol is popular with individuals with mental health issues for a reason.

Therapy and drugs for mental health issues is not sure fire, easy, or without it's own complications.

    Tim-
You are right. The difference is in how people respond and that usually depends on how well-known a person was and why that person was well-known. Some deaths are mourned, some deaths cheered, and others trotted out as statistics. How they respond is often not even really about the person, but what the person represents. Is it fair that people on some random political forum make over 200 posts about a famous comedian dying in the latter years of his life when countless people die under more tragic circumstance? No. Were Williams seeing all these reactions to his death he may very well be cracking jokes about the absurdity of it all. Still people take their time to do it. A curious thing indeed.

his genius was unique....and oooh so entertaining

I remember him doing the James Lipton interview show.....and he did this bit with a lady's scarf

He must have done 5-6 minutes improv just using the scarf as a prop

George Carlin and Robin Williams are headlining one hell of an act somewhere.....

I bet front row tickets are hard to come by....

    RIP Robin....

This is the important stuff. We can’t get lost in discrimination. We can’t get lost in B.S. We can’t get lost tearing each other down. I want to make a point here that no matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship, who you love, how you identify, and yeah, how you run, that if you have good public policy ideas, if you are well qualified for office, bring those ideas to the table, because this is your America, too. This is our commonwealth of Virginia, too.

William's situation reminds me of another great comic, Richard Jeni who also committed suicide. There's something about those who make us laugh who are so absolutely sad themselves. I have heard Chevy Chase also fights with deep depression.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

Looks like alimony and money issues from two divorces was part of his despair.
