I wouldn't draw a false 'red-line' with Russia, because they'll take a lot of latitude with it in the future.

    The future is now.

It kind of is but before Obama is out of office, Putin might really try and take control of the surrounding countries gas lines.

Yep. There is that sinking feeling that Putin won't get a better chance.

And what precisely could we (The US) have done in this situation. And by "precisely" I mean please be specific not spew out some ridiculous talking point about leadership or strength.
Send Troops? (risk starting a direct war with Russia)
Send arms to Ukraine? (Start the cold war up all over again)
Sanctions? (already did that and are expected severely hadicap Russia's economy but alas sanction take a long time so we will have to wait and see)
Deploy the eouropean missle defense system? (No effect on the current situation in Ukrain and only risks escalation of the situation, essentially symbolic)

So what SPECIFICALLY could we have done differently?

(I'm going to go ahead and predict posts re: Obama's weakness, lack of leadership, or a plethora of other vague comments that don't actually mean anything as opposed to anything actually specific)

If Putin is a former KBG operative bent on re-establishing the Soviet Empire, that would be prudent course of action.

It's unlikely that we will ever have another president with no courage, no national pride and no sense of reality as regards the nature of evil in the world.

Dealing with Russia has always been a dicey situation for any President, because they're simply too powerful to fight directly with. The whole cold war was essentially a struggle with each other thru 3rd world countries, finances and resources.

Combine a dicey situation with a clueless president and this the situation that results.

This did not start up yesterday. It's been building for years.

It's possible that no president could have possible avoided this, but the obvious shortfall of Obama in every foreign policy theatre is just too consistent to have expected anything but another shortfall in this one.

Perhaps the master plan is to allow Iran to develop the A-Bomb, watch idly while the Sunni ISIS overruns Iraq and then overcomes the Shia Iranians, takes their bomb and blows it up in Washington after a Republican has been elected so Obama can blame the Republicans.

The Republicans are the only enemy that Obama actually recognizes and tries to diminish.

Maybe if Obama is convinced that Putin is a Republican...

I think Obama is somewhat realistically sympathetic to the plight of the less fortunate. Our social structure towards the middle class down is becoming decimated by the leveraged and well positioned, to the point of criminality. Though, I do not believe his naivete on foreign policy is working. We cannot be the saviors of all the world's unfortunate at once. But again allowing a whole group to be subjected to genocide (Yezidi), because he doesn't know when to get involved is another strategic mistake. It emboldens criminal behavior from organized thugs in the future, much like the Drug Cartels.
