Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

Apparently, the Pentagon Press Secretary has disputed the NYT story:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/08/07/us-iraq-security-pentagon-idUSKBN0G72HM20140807

It has been reported that humanitarian drops took place: http://abcnews.go.com/International/us-begins-humanitarian-airdrops-iraq/story?id=24884633&ts=true

Perhaps witnesses might have confused the humanitarian drops with air strikes.

A bit late, but good news nonetheless. I would hope that our involvement is not strictly limited to protecting religious minorities, but also aiming to regain crucial cities and facilities as well.

Hopefully the planes making non lethal aid drops are out of range of IS fighters.

This is why you don't announce ahead of time when you're going to withdraw most of your forces. The only real answer to this is to send them back in.

Oh dear lord, I just pm'd the Pentagon to ignore that request.

How could someone confuse the two? And does the DOD Spokesperson tell us the truth All Of The Time?

CNN just reported that Obama is meeting right now with heads of state and chief military officers. We've got to get a handle on this crisis or we're going to really have a mess to deal with.

No, of course they don't.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be true. What a tragedy.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

ISIS is heavily entrenched in the area and getting them out is going to take a huge military effort.
the Iraqi army evidently is not geared to stop these people and we cannot count on our allies to assist us again in iraq.

no amount of air strikes are going to get rid of them either.

And our action in Libya and Syria has strengthened and emboldened them, that's the tragedy in this.

Re: American Forces Said to Bomb ISIS Targets in Iraq

Hopefully he is raining blood and horror on ISIS as we speak and not a spray painted 'red line'.

umm i wouldn't get your hopes up any.

They were accompanied by fighter jets. That's probably where the confusion arose.

Fighter jets are involved in the air-drop by protecting the transports. Whether they needed to lay down some suppressive fire is not known.

I'm not sure if those people will be able to get to the supplies, if they don't use some air support?

21st century aircraft weaponry would absolutely slaughter anyone sitting in a lousy trench.

Furthermore those trenches have to be supplied over flat, open ground: another slaughter.

Good news, hope it won't be the next fake "red line" we are used to lately.

Apparently the confusion came from the Kurd's reporting American fighters were hitting ISIS around Irbil, when they were Iraqi F-16's that killed two ISIS commanders. An easy mistake, since we supplied the jets to Iraq.

No lines have been drawn.

The supplies are for some of the Yezedi who are trapped on a mountain between Kurdish and IS forces, it will not help those facing the continued Islamist offensive and savagery.

It will if we sustain the air strikes it in all their areas and eventually get Iraqi troops back in there.
