I read a report that two F/A-18's from the carrier Bush used laser-guided 500-lb. bombs against one or more artillery pieces firing on Peshmerga forces near Irbil.
If true, that emphasizes just how much the U.S. could do to tip the scales against the jihadists with very little risk to our forces. The Peshmerga are pretty good fighters, and they could probably deal with any comparable number of jihadists carrying small arms. But with rifles, a scattering of machine guns, and a couple old tanks, the Kurds can't hold the line against artillery, even if it's only firing from a couple miles away.
Suppose, though, that the U.S. puts a drone overhead, or has a few special forces helping the Peshmerga with equipment that can get an exact fix on artillery as soon as it fires. In open, treeless country like that, those guns now become defenseless targets that aircraft can easily knock out.
In the same way, the jihadists would have to travel fifteen miles or so from where they were yesterday to reach Irbil. Any attack heavy enough to have a reasonable chance of taking even part of the city would have to include vehicles traveling on roads, without cover and with no significant anti-aircraft defense. U.S. aircraft, whether jets from carriers, attack helicopters operating from a secure Kurdish base, or even armed drones, could quickly locate a force like that and destroy it in the open.
You should be thanking Bush, since he was the one that made the deal to withdraw from Iraq...
Sadly this will only help ISIS in their propaganda... the crusaders are coming.. and that will make Muslims rally behind them. It should have been the Saudis or Iranians that should have done the bombing.. or Turkey.
I think they want the US, so before they send some terrorists, let's oblige them.
ISIS: 'We Will Raise The Flag Of Allah In The White House' | The Daily Caller
The terror group President Barack Obama threatened to strike in Iraq Thursday evening is itself threatening to strike the American homeland. ISIS’s says it will conquer the United States.
“I say to America that the Islamic Caliphate has been established,” Abu Mosa, a spokesman for the terror group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), told VICE Media in a video interview posted online Thursday. “Don’t be cowards and attack us with drones. Instead send your soldiers, the ones we humiliated in Iraq.”
“We will humiliate them everywhere, God willing, and we will raise the flag of Allah in the White House,” he added.
Einstein, "science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."
The US better be careful - I'm not exactly sure where I read it but there may be Stinger missiles in the hands of ISIS, and if they are the individual type and in working order, we may have casualties.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.
The problem with ISIL is that it is a blending of religious fanatics and disenfranchised tribes and former Saddam military people. In fact the main military leader is supposed to be a former top Saddam general. With the US bombing them, then they can use it as part of the propaganda machine to win over more tribes and people and keep the population in check.
Had it been a Muslim country doing the bombing, preferably from a shia country, then this propaganda element could not be exploited. Turkey would have been perfect but they dont like the Kurds and actually has an ISIL gift shop somewhere in Turkey selling t-shirts and other swag..
Basically we are in a no win situation and the people of the region are the ones who are going to suffer.
