Mount Sinai patient tested for Ebola virus

Mount Sinai patient who traveled to West Africa tested for Ebola virus | 7online.com

    UPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) --
Mount Sinai Hospital is performing tests on a patient who had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola has been reported, the hospital says.

A male patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms came to the hospital's emergency room on Monday morning.

The hospital says the patient has been placed in strict isolation and is undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of his symptoms.

It's just like in the movies except people really die.

Imo, it is insane to be bringing back ANYONE who has ebola. Period. I don't care that they are wonderful people, and I don't care that they do missionary work. To purposely let anyone across our borders who has a known infection like that, is crazy.

I like spice on my food, not in the health and well-being of American citizens. To me, it is crazy to even take the chance.

Would not be worried about those that they bring in, in controlled environments. That there has not been a ban on travel from the effective countries is what worries me more. Already the UK has one suspected case and the UK and US are the main entries from the effective countries and both are taking no precautions.

No it ****ing isn't. This isn't a zombie movie. This virus is not airborne. It is not difficult to contain.

Re: Mount Sinai patient tested for Ebola virus

There are actually 3 patients in NYC who are being treated as potential Ebola cases. The one at Mt Sinai, one at Bellevue and one at NYU Langone. All these cases are unrelated and involve people who flew from west Africa to the US.
Of course the CDC is saying nothing's confirmed and theres nothing to see here folks. This will play out in the following days. All I can say is, it's time to stop treating our country like a YMCA, where anyone can wander in from anywhere anytime they feel like it. Just two weeks ago, liberals were laughing at conservatives who said immigrants might potentially bring Ebola to the United States. The liberal attitude is going to bring disaster here sooner or later.

Here's the three NYC cases so far:

"The city’s health department issued a statement on Monday saying that after consulting with Mount Sinai and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, “the health department has concluded that the patient is unlikely to have Ebola. Specimens are being tested for common causes of illness and to definitively exclude Ebola. Testing results will be made available by C.D.C. as soon as they are available.”

And they are probably right. The symptoms of "fever + GI distress" are fairly common, especially among international travelers. All of the NYC cases have been found to be from other diseases.

In addition, a disease like Ebola is relatively easy to stop in an industrialized nation like the US. It isn't airborne, we've got the facilities, and we have the right protocols to contain it. It's much harder in West Africa, where lots of people are skeptical of Western medicine, insist on leaving hospitals, want to bury their dead, and don't have any real systems in place.

Basically, the hospitals are erring on the side of caution for individuals who potentially might be exposed to Ebola. It's a smart move, and it should not be used to justify a panic.

What are you proposing? A total travel ban for anyone from West Africa, perhaps? What about US citizens who travel to Liberia?

Dude, this has nothing to do with immigration policies. And Ebola is not going to enter the US via the Mexican border.

So the reemergence of tuberculosis, whopping cough, and polio in the US isn't related to immigration? What are those related to?

The open door policy of the United States is bound to lead to some kind of disaster. It happened in the Boston Marathon Bombing case, and a point could be made for the same with 9/11.
