Mount Sinai patient who traveled to West Africa tested for Ebola virus | 7online.com

UPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) --
Mount Sinai Hospital is performing tests on a patient who had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola has been reported, the hospital says.

A male patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms came to the hospital's emergency room on Monday morning.

The hospital says the patient has been placed in strict isolation and is undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of his symptoms.

Uh oh, hope that thing isn't here already?

Imo, it is insane to be bringing back ANYONE who has ebola. Period. I don't care that they are wonderful people, and I don't care that they do missionary work. To purposely let anyone across our borders who has a known infection like that, is crazy.

Yeah...but it spices things up.

Would not be worried about those that they bring in, in controlled environments. That there has not been a ban on travel from the effective countries is what worries me more. Already the UK has one suspected case and the UK and US are the main entries from the effective countries and both are taking no precautions.

No it ****ing isn't. This isn't a zombie movie. This virus is not airborne. It is not difficult to contain.

There are actually 3 patients in NYC who are being treated as potential Ebola cases. The one at Mt Sinai, one at Bellevue and one at NYU Langone. All these cases are unrelated and involve people who flew from west Africa to the US.
Of course the CDC is saying nothing's confirmed and theres nothing to see here folks. This will play out in the following days. All I can say is, it's time to stop treating our country like a YMCA, where anyone can wander in from anywhere anytime they feel like it. Just two weeks ago, liberals were laughing at conservatives who said immigrants might potentially bring Ebola to the United States. The liberal attitude is going to bring disaster here sooner or later.

Here's the three NYC cases so far:

"The city’s health department issued a statement on Monday saying that after consulting with Mount Sinai and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, “the health department has concluded that the patient is unlikely to have Ebola. Specimens are being tested for common causes of illness and to definitively exclude Ebola. Testing results will be made available by C.D.C. as soon as they are available.”

And they are probably right. The symptoms of "fever + GI distress" are fairly common, especially among international travelers. All of the NYC cases have been found to be from other diseases.

In addition, a disease like Ebola is relatively easy to stop in an industrialized nation like the US. It isn't airborne, we've got the facilities, and we have the right protocols to contain it. It's much harder in West Africa, where lots of people are skeptical of Western medicine, insist on leaving hospitals, want to bury their dead, and don't have any real systems in place.

Basically, the hospitals are erring on the side of caution for individuals who potentially might be exposed to Ebola. It's a smart move, and it should not be used to justify a panic.

What are you proposing? A total travel ban for anyone from West Africa, perhaps? What about US citizens who travel to Liberia?

Dude, this has nothing to do with immigration policies. And Ebola is not going to enter the US via the Mexican border.

So the reemergence of tuberculosis, whopping cough, and polio in the US isn't related to immigration? What are those related to?

The open door policy of the United States is bound to lead to some kind of disaster. It happened in the Boston Marathon Bombing case, and a point could be made for the same with 9/11.

They're not related to Ebola

Conflating those with Ebola is why we laugh at conservatives

Actually, that's not true. Cons give us plenty of reasons to laugh at them

Fear rules you.

Two things define a liberal; a complete lack of foresight and an inability to learn from past mistakes.

And a lack of logic rules proud liberals. As well as guilt.

quite the generalization you are throwing about just to get a personal dig in.

btw... I've no guilt nor massive fear so I guess there goes your lame argument. Meanwhile you still have to stew in pants crapping fear of:

every person, especially brown person, crossing the border,
every Mormon going on a mission to another country,
every Catholic going on a mission to another country,
every Protestant going on a mission to another country,
every American going on a vacation outside our borders and coming back,
every plane that lands at one of our airports from another land,
and so on,
and so on,
and so on,
etc.. etc... etc...

Doesn't sound so logical to me. But I guess that's because, by your words, proud liberals are illogical? lol

An immigrant with ebola, tuberculosis and whooping cough whose planning to bomb the boston marathon is right there under your bed. Good night, happy dreams and sleep tight!

The idea that the US has an "open door policy" is absolutely ludicrous.

So the reemergence of tuberculosis
TB cases have been falling since the early 90s. The "re-emergence" was about 30 years ago, and had nothing to do with illegal immigration.

whopping cough
Whooping cough cases are reappearing, because misinformed people are terrified of vaccinations.

Vaccine refusal fuels whooping cough outbreaks, study finds - NBC News

and polio in the US isn't related to immigration?
The US has been polio-free for about 30 years. Polio has been eradicated pretty much everywhere except Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

There was a small outbreak of a polio-like virus recently (enterovirus 68). The outbreak had nothing to do with immigration, legal or otherwise.

There is no "open door" policy.

The Tsarnevs were in the US legally. Legal residency requires a great deal of effort and stringent requirements, including a medical exam and yes, immunizations.

And no, it doesn't make sense to say that every immigrant is guilty by association, because two immigrant kids made a terrible decision to engage in terrorism.

We do need to be very careful when it comes to Ebola. However, all this nativist misinformation is not helping anyone.

CNN and other news outlets are doing their best to raise a fear frenzy over Ebola. Maybe by playing up the increased cases in a couple of countries in AFRICA where sanitation is poor takes away from the fears people in this country legitimately have with the influx of illegals from countries that do not immunize their children. Where numerous cases of outbreaks of antibiotic resistant tuberculosis are being reported along with other childhood viruses that were pretty much under control in this country now making a comeback due to the increase in those who are not vaccinated. Measles can be a real threat to pregnant women. That is why this country started a nationwide program that was established in 1965 for the vaccination of all children over the age of nine months.

They say Ebola is transmitted through bodily fluids, most often diarrhea. They are beefing up the efforts to spray down the huts in the areas where the people seem to be getting infected and improve the practices of burial of one who has died of the disease. These are the same countries that the U.S. tax dollars has sent mega bucks to teach uncircumcised males how to wash themselves properly in order to help stop the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

A few centuries back the world was faced with the Bubonic plague. Most physicians at the time would be checking a dead body out for causes of death and then go and examine a live patient without washing their hands between the two infecting the live patient. Oddly, the washing of hands goes back to Leviticus and it was through those Scriptures that taught physicians at that time an important lesson and led to controlling the plague.

The best defense any of us has for any outbreak like this is washing our hands frequently.
Some other things one may want to take into consideration is take your shoes off as soon as you enter your home so you do not spread whatever you walked through that day into your home.

Women and their handbags carry a lot of unwanted bacteria/disease etc. ....Don't place it on a countertop where you prepare food or a table where you eat.

Use the antibacterial wipes at the grocery store to wipe off the handle of the cart you are using.

Clean your steering wheel on your car with an antibacterial wipe frequently.

When is the last time you cleaned the doorknobs in your home?

When is the last time you touched a public doorknob then minutes later touched your face, eyes, mouth etc.?

Send your kids to school with hand sanitizers and teach them the importance of using them often.

I think that's enough examples to make the case. It's common sense that protects any of us from something like Ebola or anything else.

I'd rather be a little fearful and paranoid than sick and dead. By then it's too late to say, "gee, guess I should've took that more seriously."

Besides, I'm already a borderline germaphobe and take as many precautions as possible, while surveys show that half the doctors don't even wash their hands after using the potty. It's others I worry about being nasty.

Because you are a "germaphobe", you will probably add years to your life and spare yourself some unwanted invasions into your body......

Keep washing those hands!

I too have read different accounts where physicians can be the crux of spreading disease from their ties they would once dress in that were never laundered daily to the use of their cell phones contaminated from one patient to the next.

I got sick constantly when I was younger. Norovirus and flu's every year almost but much less now.

Fortunately, many hospitals have become aware that they were the biggest concentration and spreaders of diseases (Flu, MRSA, C.Diff, CRE).

The last few bugs I caught were visiting sick relatives in hospitals a few years ago. I've worked around doctors for 25 yrs and they're usually on call so long that's why they never changed from their college years into cleaner people. If you ever see a doctor in office with wrinkly clothes, he/she probably slept there overnight.

I did not have my children easily. I am not made up with those spreading hips that allow easy births. There is no way to describe the birth of both my children other than miracles. Both were hard labors for them and myself. They got stuck in the birth canal and labored to the point that the child was in danger as well as myself. Both times the delivery room looked like a three ring circus of specialists ready to take over whether it be for the child or myself at a point where both of us were in danger of kicking the bucket. After the birth of my son, the attending physician came to make the rounds was wearing a pair of shoes splattered with blood. When I looked down at the shoes, my first response was "looks like you had a long night by the looks of your shoes". He said "No that was from yesterday." Ewwwweeee! Even in my twenties I knew that was just so wrong and learned a life lesson. Cheers Grip
