Mount Sinai patient tested for Ebola virus

According to the new this morning, Mount Sinai is just being over cautious. They do not believe it is Ebola. Furthermore, they are confident they are taking the proper precautions to keep it where it is. With that said, I 100% agree with everyone who did not want the uncontained virus to come to America. Why help it spread?

The patient coming to the US isn't just sitting in coach on a ****ing Delta flight. It is contained.

Among the significant revelations are that individuals from nations currently suffering from the world’s largest Ebola outbreak have been caught attempting to sneak across the porous U.S. border into the interior of the United States. At least 71 individuals from the three nations affected by the current Ebola outbreak have either turned themselves in or been caught attempting to illegally enter the U.S. by U.S. authorities between January 2014 and July 2014.

Leaked CBP Report Shows Entire World Exploiting Open US Border

I'm not wild about the source but it's not surprising, nor would it be if the gov't denies it.

I am not so widely enthusiastic about that. The doctor and the nurse have both said they took proper precautions to keep themselves from contracting the virus. Now, doctors and nurses in America are going to take the proper precautions to keep themselves from contracting the virus. I didn't work in Africa, why are we so sure we can do that here in America?

Great point on flying coach though. That was my point initially. I am so glad you could help me find the way on that.

They were both transported by military aircraft to military fields. These people know what they're doing.

Because you are a "germaphobe", you will probably add years to your life and spare yourself some unwanted invasions into your body......

Keep washing those hands!

I too have read different accounts where physicians can be the crux of spreading disease from their ties they would once dress in that were never laundered daily to the use of their cell phones contaminated from one patient to the next.

Or lose years from the cumulative effects of those years of anxiety and stress.

The same people knew what they were doing and contracted the virus. We aren't perfect. Because we aren't perfect, mistakes can happen and have.

If your target is perfection, humanity will never attempt anything. By your metric, we shouldn't even attempt to treat patients with ebola at all. Just, what, lock them in a room to die, right? Mistakes happen!

We have procedures that bring the risk to negligible levels. We have procedures that mitigate damage should mistakes occur. These are controlled circumstances.

This thing is not a virus from a zombie movie. It really doesn't spread that well. The only reason anyone gives a **** about ebola is its unusually high mortality rate.

I didn't say any of that. Show me where I said don't treat ebola patients at all. You can't. Silly comments like that make it hard to take you honestly.

You can never eliminate risk, you can only try to manage it. And the best way to do that is keep the virus off this continent. The doctor and nurse who are affected were taking the proper precautions. They have said that themselves. Yet they still caught the virus.

There is absolutely no reason for bringing it across the Atlantic.

You bring it across the Atlantic to study it and treat the people infected.

They say they took proper precautions. What were those precautions? Do you know? Do you really think they had access to the kind of equipment, infrastructure, and trained personnel we have here?

The risk of release is negligible. I'll bet forum donations that it doesn't escape these two patients in the facilities they are in now. Say, 100:1 odds?

Yes, they followed the protocol they were given. Does it matter if I know? No. It matters that the experts know. The same experts who are bringing it here to study. Study it there. Don't bring it here.

You have are making an emotional argument and not a rational one. You haven't provided one reason to bring it across the Atlantic. You can't assure, and neither can the doctors that it will not spread here.

Uhh, no, you're the one reacting out of fear. I am reacting based on the fact that the risk is negligible. You can't assure me a meteor wont strike my head tomorrow. That doesn't mean I'm going to plan my day around the idea.

These people are Americans, and they can be treated better here than there. We can study the virus better here than there. Africa doesn't have the infrastructure, resources, or expertise to do this like we can.

There's no reason not to bring these people here. This is not an airborne virus. It really doesn't spread easily.

But because it has such a high virulence, it's irresponsible to bring a potential disease vector into the country when it is looking potentially like the start of an epidemic.

If these people were housed in bsl-4 facilities, maybe, but how do we know others weren't infected in flight?

Because this wasn't freaking coach class on a Delta flight, but rather a military aircraft that knew the patients were infected?

I mean, are you picturing them just sitting in a seat and nobody else on the plane is wearing protective gear?

I'm not sure you understand what "airborne" means. This study just says inter-species transmission occurs through species we didn't know of before.

But funny you should mention recent studies:

Regardless, it's irresponsible to bring potential disease vectors into the country... Especially when you are dealing with a virus that is to be worked on in bio safety level 4 facilities.

A quarantine wing In a hospital like the dr was brought to is bsl-2 MAX.

Right, but that was in a situation where there was no direct contact between the species.

Airborne does not necessarily mean it spreads through the wind, if just being on the receiving end of a sneeze 20 ft away would still constitute airborne transmission, further distinction is really just nitpicking beyond that...

The other issue is the lag from getting infected to showing symptoms, that will cause problems.

There is no logical reason to bring them here. We can't treat them better here. The treatment is antibiotics and monitoring their vitals. We sent the drug that was manufactured in Seattle to them in Africa.

Your metaphor of meteors doesn't work. Africa is approaching 1000 dead and 1800 infected. Did 1800 people get grazed on the head with a meteor yesterday?

The virus could not be contained by people who are trained not to be exposed to the virus. Do you understand how the doctor and nurse got infected? You cannot assure that it won't happen again. And because you can't assure that it can't happen again, it does not make logical sense to transport them across the ocean while they are carrying the virus.

Exactly... and because it kills 90% of those infected, even though it does not spread quickly, it still gets treated as the highest level of safety protocol.

However, it's at least Canada, us, and Germany that have deliberately imported infected people.

You can't assure anything. Anything can fail. But sometimes the odds are low enough.

And I absolutely agree with that. Here is where we differ. I am not convinced there was a need to bring them back to America and increase the odds here. We could have negated the odds by not allowing it to cross the ocean.
