5-year old Idaho girl dies afterIdaho playmate gets gun

It is a kick in the gut tragedy. I would think the owner of that gun is already punishing himself far greater than a jail sentence.

It is like the guy who backs his pickup over his 3 yr old son in the driveway. Do you really need to give this guy an unsafe driving ticket. Am just surprised they don't commit suicide after killing a kid.

What would be revealing is the house the gun was kept in. Is a trash heap with other weapons laying around or did someone have a brain fart and leave their pistol on the night stand.

If that gun had been securely stored, how could that accident happen?

Explain that to us.

That child is dead because a gun owned failed to securely store his gun.

He also didn't teach his kid that he shouldn't play with the gun.

Did the article say that?
Yes. The kid played with a gun, according to the article. Therefore the child wasn't taught not to play with guns.

This thread is a perfect example of why gun safty needs to be a mandatory part of school.

This story got me thinking..

Should people be charged when a Child finds its way into a neighbors swimming pool ?

Because drowning accidents kills more kids than gun accidents

I go back and forth on the issue. I had a neighbor sho lost their 3 year old in another neighbors pool about 15 years ago.

my father's best friend lost his grand son in the same way. The mother of the child was a coked out loser who got wasted and let the two year old wander off to a nearby neighbor's property which had a pool. The child fell in and died. The coker tried to sue the pool owner. the divorced father of the child (my friend) killed himself-it was the last straw in a troubled life.

no one intends such a tragedy. and since INTENT has no relevance-punishing people won't deter such behavior. If the thought of a child dying doesn't deter you, the thought of being fined or perhaps jailed isn't going to deter you either.

It doesn't have too, because, obviously, the kid mishandled the gun.

A five-year-old kid mishandled a gun? Are you seriously suggesting a five-year-old might know how to properly handle a gun?
Whoever had the responsibility for the gun needs to be charged with manslaughter because a five-year-old can't be responsible for anything.
I'm telling ya, jackasses like that are what's going to make all yis have to pass basic gun safety tests before you're allowed to aquire handguns and it'll be impossible to argue against the public safety aspect.
Idiots lead to inconveniences for everyone.

I agree the parents should have their firearms secured. However, asking how it could happen with a secured firearm is like asking how that child just managed to do what no adult seems to be able to, open that child-proof pill bottle, or drive the parent's car through the garage. Even at five I was getting into things my parents had well secured. My brother and sister never did, but I had a creative knack.

All the more reason not to have a gun in a house with young children. Of course you don't see that.

such a law is unconstitutional

end of discussion

I'd rather we make people pass a college level course on political science before they could vote-that would remedy far more problems than gun safety classes given accidental shootings are going WAY DOWN despite more and more guns in circulation

that's a stupid suggestion. all the reason to keep the gun secured. but to those who are terrified about guns, they will claim this is a reason to ban them

No, that won't be the end of the discussion. The constitution is more flexible than the ten commandments.
What the gun advocacy group (you) need to be doing is be seen trying to prevent these things happening rather than backpedaling to the constitution' and educating gun owners, in very simple terms, about gun safety.
I suspect that what you consider iron-clad is a bit more fragile than that.

I have no duty to stop others from being stupid in order to preserve my rights.

the fact is-there are lots of people who will use any excuse to try to ban guns. My duty is not to misuse my weapons

And to think there are people who want cocain legalized.

I'd really like to add that this story is one that supports the need to allow concealed carry. When I had concealed carry, my weapon was always on my person until bedtime, and essentially right back on my person in the morning. The weapon would never have been available to child during normal child hours, it would be on me, secure.

Open carry would bring about the same result in this case as concealed carry. Why limit to just concealed carry?

Educate gun owners, absolutely.....and kids, too, via manditory saftey classes in school.

I do. we spend way too much money incarcerating people who want to get high in their own homes. We see way too many people being robbed and killed to pay for artificially high cocaine because of the insane war on drugs. and we give the cartels power by keeping the stuff illegal

I say legalize it

tax it

and if someone gets high and wastes others-he gets 30 years in the hole. but prohibition proved how stupid prohibition is

Because open carry is illegal in some states.

How does that not end with more coked-up sitters letting kids wander off?

Not when it comes to guns. Haven't you heard? Guns are idiot proof because they kill no one. That 5 year old did not know how to handle a gun because of societies prejudice against guns. It is never the gun owners fault because he had that gun to protect his family. That's how you sell the most guns. Make sure there are NO consequences for gun ownership...EVER. It is also how you get the highest gun murder rate in the western world of course. And this case would not even be part of those statistics because it will be declared "accidental".

ha ha ha I thought you were serious for a minute there.

Kinda like I didnt drink alcohol and sneak beers and stuff from the house when I was a kid because "I was taught not to."

Unconstitutional laws imo.

Did you know that laws banning concealed carry are being shot down by the courts? Why wouldn't they do the same for open carry based on the same reasoning? There is no real difference between the two.

The same type of law was overturned in Illinois, and in Washington DC the courts struck down the laws that banned any type of carrying a gun in public. Both open and concealed carry. I think its just a matter of time before those states that have banned open carry will get their laws struck down too.

See I would have thought, of the two, that concealed carry would be banned, because then everyone knows that you're armed and there's no ignoring gun-buster signs.

Because open carry is for idiots and show offs, not the type of people I want carrying guns.

Hence why the best gun to own if one has children is a Glock with no round chambered. Problem is ... if one has a gun at home for safety against others, it's pretty useless if it's disassembled and/or locked up. So then what's the point in having it. First one has to educate one's children, not pretend the gun doesn't exist as many seem to, and secondly have a gun a child cannot, CANNOT, operate.

A Glock has such a stiff slide, no child can chamber a round, yet an adult can do it in a second meaning it's ready for an adult to use if an immediate threat occurs. That's what I had and every year on their birthday's they were required to try to pull the slide (with no rounds or magazine in the Glock), and as soon as they could it was off to gun training and the shooting range.

Both my 1911's have got very strong springs and stiff hammers so racking the slide cannot be done easily by even a few adults much less a young child. I always keep the chamber clear when Im in the house so even if my son can somehow reach for it (even though he normally cant) it would be impossible for him to rack the slide. Ive trained using an Isreali draw (racking the slide as you aim for the target) so that I can chamber a round as I draw it.
