    This time, Gaza fighting is 'proxy war' for entire Mideast

    This time, Gaza fighting is 'proxy war' for the Mideast - CNN.com

    "This is unprecedented in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict," says CNN's Ali Younes, an analyst who has covered the region for decades. "Most Arab states are actively supporting Israel against the Palestinians -- and not even shy about it or doing it discreetly."

    It's a "joint Arab-Israeli war consisting of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia against other Arabs -- the Palestinians as represented by Hamas."
    As the New York Times put it, "Arab leaders, viewing Hamas as worse than Israel, stay silent."
    Interesting that many Middle Eastern countries are choosing to support Israel in this conflict this time.

    I agree. This is a proxy war between the Shiites and the Sunnis, and behind Hamas is Iran. Sunnis and Shias are deadly enemies. This rift in Islam is similar to the schism in the Christian Church in the Middle ages, where the Catholics murdered millions of non-Catholics (Jews and Protestants) during the Inquisition. That same paradigm is what is driving what we are seeing today in the Middle East. This war between Shias and Sunnis is not going to end soon. The only silver lining here is that the world of Islam is so divided that some of the Sunnis are actually supporting Israel rather than Iran.

    While I will not defend the evil and inhuman Catholic barbarity done during the Inquisition, the death toll has been greatly exaggerated;

    1) The Myth of Multiple "Millions" Supposedly Killed in the Catholic Inquisitions, Revisited (Anti-Catholic John Bugay's Historically Groundless Claims)

    2)
    García Cárcel estimates that the total number processed by the Inquisition throughout its history was approximately 150,000; applying the percentages of executions that appeared in the trials of 1560–1700—about 2%—the approximate total would be about 3,000 put to death. Nevertheless, it is likely that the toll was much higher, keeping in mind the data provided by Dedieu and García Cárcel for the tribunals of Toledo and Valencia, respectively. It is likely that between 3,000 and 5,000 were executed - source

    This is true. Although many are trying to use that as proof that these Arab countries supporting Israel, SYMPATHIZE with Israel, which of course is not true.

    Lol, Shias and Sunnis hate each other more than they hate Israel, that's all.

    The op is trash, they are NOT supporting Israel!! They just don't like authoritative regimes that come to power democratically, and of course the Sunni/Shia thing you point out.

    from the guy that rejects the same sources when myself or others use them. Now I know your off the res, thinking that any Arabs states "support" Israel. And, you clearly have spent too much time in CR learning Spanish and have failed to educate yourself on the differences between the Sunni and Shia, if you even know who they are.

    Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have diplomatic relations. Now that's real support!!

    From your link,

    “the Arab states’ loathing and fear of political Islam is so strong that it outweighs their allergy to Benjamin Netanyahu,”

    You should have finished the quote. “I have never seen a situation like it, where you have so many Arab states acquiescing in the death and destruction in Gaza and the pummeling of Hamas. The silence is deafening.”

    Of course Egypt and Syria would like to see Hamas neutralized. But suggesting that the fact they share that one view with Israel equates with Arab states supporting Israel is both laughable, and another dishonesty of yours.
