GOP blocks bill that would curb tax breaks for firms moving operations overseas

*shrug* It's no worse than the Hastert Rule, or filibusters. Or, inserting unrelated amendments into a bill.

This is just how legislatures work. It's a bit messy, but ultimately you give a little, you get a little, and the bill gets passed.

reid is giving nothing that is why that energy bill died as well and it was for the most part going to pass. then reid blocked any and all amendments to the bill and that
caused the senate to revolt.

so the republicans are giving reid his own medicine.

so until reid and senate democrats decide to work with republicans nothing is ever going to make it out of the senate.
the founding fathers were smart when they made the government the way they did.

Why do you think there's anything other than the actual realities that encompasses all the facts?
classic strawman

I'm talking about the bizarre idea that there really are two sides to every story.
Some stories have one side, some stories have two sides, and some stories have many sides. I wouldn't assume that such a short article covered all sides.

Ok then, name one time in the last 6 years where Ried "gave a little after giving a little ".

I think he's sitting on something like 350 House Bills.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) blocked Republicans from offering amendments to the bill, which is why they voted against advancing the bill.

as long as harry reid continues his draconian rule of the senate bills will continue to get blocked. this is the majority of reason that these bills are being filibustered.
is that reid refuses to allow republicans to submit amendments to the bill.

so reid can sit on it and spin.

What part of the bill did they dislike other than their limitations to add amendments? I know that there's a general distaste for increasing revenues, and suspect that's probably the underlying issue.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but if a company that moves its operations overseas, either completely or in part, is still entitled to tax breaks/deductions, doesn't that imply that the company is paying business taxes in the US?
They are. However, the bill is designed to end tax breaks that apply when a company moves jobs overseas -- e.g. write-offs for relocating a factory.

Please. Just... no.

Republicans, mostly egged on by Newt Gingrich and his tactics, have spent years digging their partisan ditches and refusing to work with Democrats, who respond in kind. Midterm elections are coming up, and both sides are playing games. Neither side is particularly inclined to work with the other right now.

Blaming it all on Reid (or any single individual) would be like blaming Eduardo da Silva for all the flopping in soccer.

Perhaps Im am naive but why do we really need to complicate our tax code by allowing deductions to begin with? All businesses have expenses and that is an expected part of having a business. It just seems that deductions are a means for businesses who better understand tax law to have a better advantage. Would it not make as much sense in the end to either remove deductions completely or even remove business taxes altogether and have the tax only applied to an individuals income from said business?

Perhaps someone could explain to me the advantages of having corporate taxes and/or business deductions.

The only advantage to having corporate taxes and/or business deductions is control...that is, government control.

Businesses couldn't survive without righting off their expenses.

The average American business makes 17% +/- profit. If a company grosses $100,000, spends 80,000 on expenses, then has to pay 20% in taxes, it would be $3,000 in the hole. That tax code will never work.

Other than the GOP having their lips firmly wrapped around the cocks of businesses? It's possible that there are other things in the bill other than tax hikes on traitorous companies.
And there's the rub. Big business hijacked the tea party. What started out as a grass roots movement by citizens was bought by the billionaires.

This issue would be a bargaining chip for the GOP for overall tax reform, they've repeatedly said this including two years ago when the Democrats pushed this bill right before the last election. Funny that it arises consistently a few months before the election cycle.

it doesn't matter they wanted to make amendments to the bill as they should have the ability to do and reid stopped it. so they stopped reid. pretty simple if you ask me.

please stop pointing the finger. reid is in charge of the senate it is his job to move bills through the senate. he wants to run it as a draconian empire that is what he is getting in return.

they have worked with democrats they just refuse to give into there every little demand.

"I'm taking my ball and going home" isn't a particularly engaging political narrative.

The teller can be wrong. That doesn't change the facts.

And again, how do you know the teller is wrong, until you've heard the other side of the story. I'm sorry, but this sort of talk can go on forever. You tossed off a point and it was immediately broken. Quit trying to repair it and just admit to yourself you got it wrong the first time around.

And yet the dems use it every time they are in the minority position. You may not find it engaging, but it's sometimes the last arrow in the quiver.

I don't know. When I went to look at the bill tracker my eyes started to bleed trying to track everything down.
Do you honestly think a party that is notorious for being extremely pro-business and pro-outsourcing going to put in anything in the bill to harm outsourcing?

So they voted against a good bill because they mean ol harry reid wouldn't let them undermine the intent of the bill?

The biggest advantage, of course, is because that is what stimulates businesses to give ****tons of money to politicians.

Does it work? Well, just look at what the GOP is fighting for in the OP.

Thats a horrible example.

Newt Gingrich worked with President Clinton and the result of that was some pretty positive economic and fiscal accomplishments.

GOP blocks tax hike on firms moving overseas - US News

Has anyone heard the Republican side of the story?

Yes. They do not believe in closing loopholes for those corporate/person tax dodgers. Today they just stuck to their text-book script that we should lower our corporate tax rates so that these corporate people don't run off. Their answer doesn't even address the bill whatsoever.
