Ebola outbreak kills an American - CNN.com

Patrick Sawyer had one stop to make before heading home to Minnesota to celebrate his daughters' birthdays: a conference in Lagos, Nigeria.

But when he landed in Lagos, Sawyer, 40, collapsed getting off the plane. He had been infected with Ebola in Liberia, where he worked as a top government official in the Liberian Ministry of Finance.

Sawyer was isolated at a local Nigerian hospital on July 20. He died five days later.

Sawyer's wife Decontee Sawyer, lives in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, with the couple's three young daughters, 5-year-old Eva, 4-year-old Mia, and Bella, who is 1. The Sawyers are naturalized citizens; their daughters were born in the United States.

They're looking for upwards of 30,000 who may have had contact with this man. This is starting to look like a bad movie.

One American dies in another country, having contracted it in another country and it's looking like a bad movie???? I'm sure that many in those countries have been exposed by him and others, otherwise he wouldn't have been exposed. One more person isn't newsworthy. Wow, there's that drama qu... again.

Why don't you just go back to your box and smoke.

Are you aware airlines shut down service to certain cities as a result of this man's travel?

There are times when blind partisanship needs to be replaced with intelligence. Of course, to some that is an impossible task.

Precautions are being taken, but how many other reported infections do we have so far?

Yes, to assure it doesn't arrive here. Hence there's no need to panic or act like USA is in imminent danger of an Ebola epidemic. Hence why the OP is unnecessarily hyped and over-dramatic for the facts being presented.

Ebola can be very serious. Statements about ebola can set your pants on fire, according to Politifact:

"As a physician for over 30 years, I am well aware of the dangers infectious diseases pose. In fact, infectious diseases remain in the top 10 causes of death in the United States. … Reports of illegal migrants carrying deadly diseases such as swine flu, dengue fever, Ebola virus and tuberculosis are particularly concerning." -Phil Gingrey R-GA

And this guy was a doctor before becoming a politician. Maybe he caught the stupid virus in Washington. I hear it is quite prevalent there.

While dangerous illnesses could be carried across the border, illegally or just on any freakin airline flight, ebola isn't a very good candidate. It's so lethal that it tends to limit its own spread. Kills the host before it can spread. Nasty little bug. Extremely high mortality rate. Hope they figure out a vaccine, but how do you volunteer to test something like that? "Ok, here's the vaccine. Now here's an injection of ebola to see if it works!" Yeah, probably not.

If you are against the Ebola Virus you are racist.........

If you are against the Ebola Virus you are racist.........

I would like an explanation of that claim

He's doing that thing that conservatives do, where when liberals respond to "kill all the wetbacks who cross the border" with "you're a racist," therefore liberals are always calling everyone racist on the subject of illegal immigration.

Ebola is the most lethal virus on the planet and fact that symptoms don't always appear for 21 days is disconcerting for obvious reasons. Simple sweat (a bodily fluid) can transmit the disease.

If someone can contract it in a scrub area I wouldn't underrate it. If it mutates to respiratory transmission we have a pandemic on our hands.

the doctors and antibody teams ave had great success is potentially finding a vaccination for Ebola - the syerm consists of using transfusions and giving the transfusuions to the sick with the anti-body. I t has shown a lot of success as far as known cases of Ebola but the fundamental problem with the transfusion is a risk of AIDS, Hep B, Hep C, Typhoid etc, and even then if they're cured they are still quarantined because they still cary the Ebola virus but are just immune to it.

Those who survive are almost treated as a lepror colony.

I've heard that doctors are reusing needles as a common practice. Perhaps cleaning them is how some doctors have come down with the illness.

Also, because they can't seem to abstain from sex when needed, the fact that Ebola can exist in their sperm for 2 months after the symptoms disappear comes into play.

Why don't you go to a major international airport near you, and then keep us posted.

The doctors from the west don't reuse needles. The destitute native clinics areas were the ones doing it. They had no choice.

I note a tone of distain for ""they""can't abstain from sex when needed." There are a lot of humans of all cultures and races that have a problem abstaining. Hence birth control.

Been there, done that, still don't see the issue as being the hyped drama or hysteria of OP. What is it that you see when you go to a major international airport that scares you so much, and whatever it is, I suggest that if you're soooo scaredy or it's causing such high anxiety, you maybe shouldn't go to airports.

LOL

Wow, awesome post.

I disagree, I think it is newsworthy.

No, there is no need to panic.

But the region where this is growing is very poor and they are having a difficult time shutting down this outbreak.

If just one or two infected people immigrate illegally (and without government knowledge) to a western country and start spreading it in a major western city...it could potentially get very ugly.

Apparently the fatality rate from this is roughly 70%.

Nobody on this thread seems to be panicking...but it's naive to not be at least a little concerned and vigilant, IMO.

I agree it's newsworthy, I agree we need to be helping these impoverished countries resolve this and many other health issues instead of hoarding all the benefits of advanced medical research and development in the first world countries.

My comments are strictly relating to the drama queen nature of OP, nearly demanding that we all panic right now.

Ebola in it's current form of transmission is deadly but not overly virulent. The fear from the 1970's has always been if it mutated into airborne transmission, like a common flu bug. With it's long incubation cycle and high mortality rate, it could effectively wipe out a huge portion of the the global population. It would be a TEOTWAWKI event.

I can think of a couple movies where that is exactly how they started. Contagion comes immediately to mind.
