The NFL is suspending Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice two games under the personal conduct policy for an altercation that left his then-fiancee (now wife) unconscious in an Atlantic City casino elevator in February.

Rice will miss games against two AFC North rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, before he's eligible to be reinstated Sept. 12. He'll lose a third game check.

"It is disappointing that I will not be with my teammates for the first two games of the season, but that's my fault," Rice said in a statement release by the Ravens.

"As I said earlier, I failed in many ways. But, Janay and I have learned from this. We have become better as a couple and as parents. I am better because of everything we have experienced since that night. The counseling has helped tremendously.

"My goal is to earn back the trust of the people, especially the children, I let down because of this incident. I am a role model and I take that responsibility seriously. My actions going forward will show that."

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome deemed the ruling "fair" in a statement, adding: "That night was not typical of the Ray Rice we know and respect. We believe that he will not let that one night define who he is, and he is determined to make sure something like this never happens again."

Rice, a three-time Pro Bowler and standout during Baltimore's run to the Super Bowl title in the 2012 season, is among five Ravens who have been arrested this offseason. In mid-June, he met in New York with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

So pot smoking gets you four games, but spousal abuse only gets two?

I know....she spoke up for him. Dont most abused speak up for their abuser?

What kind of message does this send to our kids? Go ahead and smack around your girlfriend or spouse....no big deal. At least to the NFL

There is a video of him dragging her out of the elevator in February, and she was unconscious.....

I am just now hoping that the video of him actually pummeling her gets aired....maybe just maybe that will be enough to change the commissioners mind

And as an aside.....ESPN you must fire Stephen A Smith for his comments on air about this on Saturday

Summarizing his point of view, "well i guess you ladies need to keep from pissing those dudes off"

hadnt seen that

so sad...but so true

what a freaking bad ruling....and what a terrible message it sends

I'm not a Ravens fan, so I don't give a damn.

There are some conflicting details on what actually transpired. In the police report it is implied that she hit him, though it is not clear who initiated the confrontation. Some eyewitness contradicted the police report and said she spit on him and he hit her with an uppercut. Medics apparently stated that aside from her losing consciousness, there were no apparent injuries. The video of him dragging her out of an elevator proves basically that she was knocked unconscious. Without knowing what the altercation was about and whether there was mutual violence passing judgment is inappropriate. I mean, we can say that he treated his soon-to-be wife in a horrifically unceremonious fashion after knocking her out, but beyond that we have no more to go on here.

i disagree

maybe things are different now....i dunno

i was raised NEVER to strike a woman....EVER

we have choices....we can walk away....we can restrain until they calm down....but as soon as you find any reason where it is acceptable behavior for a man to strike a woman, we part company

yes....women can, and sometimes do piss us off

the idea is....imo we still need to be gentlemen and find alternatives other than ever striking them

i had a friend that went through an abusive relationship.....she always stuck up for him

it took her getting such a beating that he almost killed her.....

i hold abusers in the same respect as child abusers (lower than pond scum)

In the NFL you can be a rapist and get a slap on the wrist. But a lot of NFL players, coaches, and owners are going berserk over a draftee who is openly gay, but hasn't raped or assaulted anybody. Go figure. LOL.

Why does it matter what the altercation was about? What justifies one person to hit another hard enough to knock them out? That's assault. Pure and simple. Whatever she violence she may have done to him, it cannot in any way equal knocking her out (certainly spitting doesn't). If it's judged that she assaulted him, so be it, but knocking a person out, is well beyond the pale of claiming self-defense against a woman who was using only her fists (and saliva).

It's not 'assault, pure and simple'. There can be legitimate reasons for knocking someone out, or even shooting and killing them. This, however, is not one of them.

So you don't care about guys knocking their wives/girlfriends out cold and dragging them out of an elevator? Apparently only Ravens fans should care about that?

I'm a Ravens fan and I think Rice should be kicked out of the league.

Besides the fact that being unconscious is perhaps the only way to spend time in Atlantic City these days, the suspension while obscenely short is probably appropriate under a sports league's rules because the conduct has nothing to do with the game or the integrity of the game. Using any kind of illegal drug could impact on the integrity of the game.

That said, your complaint should more appropriately be placed with the legal/justice system and question why Mr. Rice isn't in jail, doing serious time, for assault, attempted murder, etc. That's the true travesty in this case, in my view.

I can see that, as it hasn't even been proven that he knocked her out. He was shown dragging her off of an elevator, but she legitimately could have passed out drunk. She still married the dude. Why would she marry him just shortly after he knocked her out?

Fair enough.

I am a chauvinist. I dont mind saying that there is NO 'reason' for a man to hit a woman. Ever. I'd sooner get my ass kicked by a girl than raise my hand to her.

The simple fact is that if the NFL is going to engage in bad conduct penalties above and beyond what the law administers, then this is a pretty sickening sentence. Ray Rice doesnt say "I didnt do anything wrong". He says "whooopsie...Sorry...." I think a half a season at least if not a full season would have been better.

I'm the last person to explain the special kind of rationale that permeates the female brain.

Many battered women feel responsible for the violence and therefore are able to forgive and forget.

Even if she did pass out drunk, it does look bad to see him nonchalantly dragging her off the elevator. I can understand the judgement on that one, justified or not.

Ray Rice is washed up anyway though. I wanted the Ravens to get rid of him even before this whole deal.

So they feel obligated to marry the dude? If so, sounds like mental illness for both parties.

I think we're talking about Ray Rice - Ray Lewis is/was the Raven's team murderer.
