Gee, we could give people medical help they want, Create an industry, and grow enough for the whole country in Florida alone.
Get rid of half the Coast Guard patrols, DEA, Courts, Jails, and create tons more tax revenue too instead of enriching 3rd world Narco traffickers/exporting money.
Phenomenal prospects even beyond the more important Freedom.
A Bit too late for one of my parents who really wanted it to improve appetite.
Now it will be legalized for medical purposes at least, in Florida.

And it's not just the young/under 29 (at 95%), over 65 voters are at 83%!
A smaller but significant majority 55/41 also support Recreational Marijuana.

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) – Floridians really, really support the legalization of medical marijuana, according to a poll released Monday morning. The poll found that 88% of Florida voters approve of medical marijuana, including 83% of voters age 65 and older and 95% of those between 18 and 29.

The support also crosses party lines, the poll by Quinnipiac University found. 80% of Republicans — whose level of support was the lowest of any subgroup — back the idea and just 19% oppose it.

Forget the stereotypes of stodgy old folks living out their golden years playing canasta and golf,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll, said in a prepared statement accompanying the results. “Almost nine in 10 Floridians favor legalizing medical marijuana and a small majority says adults should be able to possess small amounts of the drug for recreational purposes.”

The overwhelming support should cheer backers of a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would allow doctors to order marijuana for patients. Opponents of the measure have pumped at least $3 million into efforts to defeat Amendment 2, which has received heavy financial backing from Orlando trial lawyer John Morgan,
“Even though a proposal to legalize medical marijuana, on the ballot this November, must meet a 60% threshold, these numbers make a strong bet the referendum is likely to pass,” Brown said.

Florida voters also support allowing recreational marijuana by a 55% to 41% margin, but men and women are split on the issue, the poll found. Men support allowing Floridians “to legally possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use” by 61% to 36% while women are more skeptical, with 49% approving and 45% opposed. Young voters support the idea by a 72% to 25% margin, while voters 65 and older are opposed by a margin of 59% to 36%.

The survey also found that 71% of voters would support having a medical marijuana dispensary in the town where they live. The lowest level of support for having a dispensary in their neighborhoods comes from voters over age 65, with 57% in favor and 37% opposed. “No ‘Not in My Backyard’ mentality here. By an almost 3-to-1 majority, Florida voters would allow a medical marijuana dispensary near where they live,” Brown said.

And the poll found that 44% of Florida voters say they have tried pot, including 51% of men, 39% of women and 48% of voters ages 18 to 29. Just 23% of voters over 65 say they’ve tried marijuana.

Why they gotta take a shot at NIMBY.

Um. 83% of Seniors approve it.
80% of Republicans approve it. And they are the Lowest approval.

It's wanted 55/41 Even AS Recreational!

I would say "Get over it Pops", but Seniors, GOPers, both Strongly approve.
So I guess it's "Get over it.. Prude".

Should have been legalized decades ago, a whole chunk of our war on drugs which was useless as **** anyway would have been slashed.

Floridians + pot = amazingly new crazy news stories. :2razz:

oh Florida, don't ever change!

I hope it all opens up but I will say that I want it tightly regulated. Right now in Colorado they legalized pot but it is pretty much not regulated and people are making and selling all sorts of edible pot treats and the proportions of ingested THC is so out of whack that people are eating massive amounts of it when its just a few cookies. While you can't officially OD on pot, an over consumption makes for some seriously, seriously bad times. Also I don't like how they are making it more appealing to kids with candies like gummy bears and what not.

Right now the marijuana industry has public sympathy for having been unfairly under seige for so long but the tide will turn and they will eventually be viewed more like the tobacco industry. Especially if they keep appearing to target kids with their products.

The whole country is moving towards legalization. It likely won't be that long a transition.

Likely evolution of ending its prohibition. Frankly, after the booze prohib was lifted, people went nuts and booze consumption skyrocketed and eventually leveled off. Same will happen with dope.

Gonna be interesting how they handle various aspects of life where pot use is prohibited. Military, CDLs, pilots and mariner licenses, etc.

Sadly the establishment doesnt beleive in personal freedom and are spending millions in florida to keep infringing on personal rights. And conservative media is pushing this 'pot makes you dumb' meme.

Yeah the surge is predictable. When they dropped prohibition in Amsterdam the politician there was quoted some years later as saying (paraphrasing here) "we've successfully made pot boring." Taking the taboo out of it made it less appealing to the youth.

The difference is prohibition actually made alcohol expensive and less available. This is not true of pot. Just about anyone can get it if they try.

I dont believe "Floridians" are "all fired up" - I'm sure the pot heads would view it as a victory, and especially those that actually need the pot for preexisting conditions, however I don't see the typical "joe" who has never smoked pot before going through the hoops for the ability to have a physician turn into a medical weed quack just so he (or even she can get high)..

These arguments about weed are ridiculous..... Anyone who wants weed can get it as it is - especially in Florida and face relatively minimal consequences if caught...

Hell, where I'm at and if someone gets caught with weed the cops just dump it in a ditch and let everyone go.

Well, I see whole new industries born of marijuana, and I'm not just speaking of the recreational use there of. I see pharmaceuticals, textiles, plastics, and even biofuel. Our chemists should get to work on this. It's an amazing plant.

With marijuana lagalized, not only could we bridge the gap to a more "green" and energy efficient society, we could further fight the drug wars on our southern borders and stem the flow of illegal immigration fleeing the violence from south of our borders.

Marijuana legalization should be a national policy, but I'd prefer it if Texas capitalized on it first (but I'm not that greedy). By 2020, is what the bigheads in Congress stated legalization for marijuana would happen. We shall see.

I dunno about this. I've known a lot of people older than I am that never have and am inclined to accept the 23% if it's mainly those who are over 70. You know, the people we didn't trust who were over 30 back in the day. ;)

Lotta straight-arrows and also hard-core boozers in their time. In my 30's I attended the mortgage-burning party of one of my mom's friends. I'm still amazed. In addition to the bar in the house, tables had been placed in the garage, and on them were those ginormous bottles of whiskey (gallon?). I've never seen anything like the way these people emptied them. And were still standing and having a great time. Pro-drinkers.
