Inmate Dies 2 Hours After Execution in Arizona

I am glad he did not die a quiet peaceful death. Unfortunately he probably did not realize he was squirming like a worm just before you stick a fishing hook in to one. If we are going to kill the killers why should it be "humane". If someone tells you "I am going to blow you brains out" that is a humane death as there is no suffering. As the victims often wait in terror before the killer kills then the killer should experience the same trauma. Waiting a decade or more to execute someone is the stupidest single part of our penal system. How many appeal t do the victims get other than begging for the murderers not to shoot?

Me too. That asshole felt no remorse and neither do I for him. He shot two people in cold blood after what sounds like repeated domestic offenses against her and we are supposed to feel bad his execution was prolonged? As if!

Arizona execution takes nearly 2 hours - The Washington Post

He was convicted of fatally shooting Dietz and her father, 55-year-old Gene Dietz, at their auto repair shop in Tucson.

Wood and Debbie Dietz had a tumultuous relationship during which he repeatedly assaulted her. She tried to end their relationship and got an order of protection against Wood.

On the day of the shooting, Wood went to the auto shop and waited for Gene Dietz, who disapproved of his daughter’s relationship with Wood, to get off the phone. Once the father hung up, Wood pulled out a revolver, shot him in the chest and then smiled.

Wood then turned his attention toward Debbie Dietz, who was trying to telephone for help. Wood grabbed her by the neck and put his gun to her chest. She pleaded with him to spare her life. An employee heard Wood say, “I told you I was going to do it. I have to kill you.” He then called her an expletive and fired two shots in her chest.

It doesn't matter what he did. This reflects on us as a society. We have no right to treat people cruel and unusually, period. This is about us, not the criminals.

I think it reflects on his crimes and the victims who were devastated by his actions. As a society, I'm very glad some of us still value accountability for actions.

Then they are no better than the one they put to death.

A naive thing to say. "They" haven't killed two innocent people - the criminal did. Why can't you acknowledge that?

Its interesting the faux care and concern people have over these types of incidents.

First...its TRULY not as if the opponents of the death penalty give half a damn about the actual individuals. To them, its all about the cause.
Second...there ARE swift sure fire ways to make sure it happens painlessly. Maybe if people stopped fighting those means, we wouldnt have these problems.
Third...the body is pretty amazing. The body fights to live. You see a guy knocked out but his body fighting for 2 hours the effects of the injected drugs and think 'cruel and unusual'. Yet, if you go to any terminal care facility you will see bodies hanging onto life for weeks. Researchers believe that in those situations where the body fights on and the patient slips into delirium or experiences the 'death rattle (resp tract secretions) there is, regardless of spasm or uncontrolled muscle response, no indication the patient is experiencing pain.

When you are dead, you are no longer a person. Why would a person want to deny life or sight or restored health to another living person?
What would be ideal is if the doctors were allowed to harvest the organs while the patient was still 'living' just in a persistent comatose state. Thats a REALLY good idea!

For Christians. Irony. If it were not for the death penalty Jesus would not have died for our sins.

In my opinion, this makes the argument FOR the death penalty. The death penalty SHOULD be cruel and unusual.

According to numerous USSC rulings, no its not.

That doesn't give us the right to commit cruel and unusual punishments on people.
I absolutely agree. Executions should be quick, efficient, painless. I really dont think we as a society should be glorifying an execution regardless of the crime.

However.

This was not a cruel and unusual execution. The science and expectation was that this would be quick, efficient, and painless. No one planned this execution chuckling and saying "watch this ****..."

The simple fact of the matter is that there ARE fast and efficient means. Death penalty opponents rail against all of them and in many cases, this is what is left.

Thats what happens. Journalists report what they eyewitness...
And they "eyewitnessed" a guy under anesthesia suddenly awaken? Sorry, calling BS here. They witnessed convulsions and other involuntary movements and projected.

Not naive. Most of us are not barbarians, but I understand that there are some people who take pride in being uncivilized savages.

Nice emotive appeals but irrelevant. If an individual cannot intellectually discern the difference between a criminal who killed two innocent people and the state who carries out an execution BECAUSE of the criminals actions, your reasoning has no foundation, and as I said, is based on flawed emotion rather than fact or logic.

I for one do take pride in holding criminals accountable. Count me as a "savage".

Rapist, child molesters, all first degree murders not just those with special circumstances, terrorist.
All should be sent to death? Even tho we realize our justice system isnt perfect?

Whats the number of prisoner escapes each year? Some years more, some less, but roughly 2,000 a year. Recent data is hard to find.
Which is .0008% of the prison population. And how many get recaptured? From what I found 78% get recaptures almost instantly.

What does "life in prison" really mean? https://fullfact.org/factchecks/murder_homicide_sentence_licence_release_parole-28691

“In 2010, 115 people were released from prison having served a life sentence for murder. Of these, six had served fewer than 10 years. In 2011, 160 people were released from prison having served a life sentence for murder. Of these, 26 had served fewer than 10 years.”
AS your article points out its a very very small number of those serving life sentences.

It is in defense of self, others, and tribe.
The state must kill to defend?

Cruel and unusual punishment for a cruel and unusual Criminal.

At least someone admits that it was cruel and unusual. But hey lets forget the Constitution, right?

:doh Im guessing the journalists and what not who witnessed it were just lying then afterall... I mean hey, they were there and you weren't, so obviously you must know what happened..

They have no definitive evidence that the person ever regained consciousness. Given the dose of anesthesia administered, regaining consciousness isn't going to happen.

Not a whole lot different than the people who tried to claim Terry Schiavo was conscious because she sat up in bed... even though she was clinically brain dead.

We have several eyewitness accounts and all you have backing up your account is "well he coulda of been".

Sure you do, several. And should their accounts ever make it into a courtroom as evidence they will get decimated because no definitive determination of consciousness can be made based on observations of convulsive movements. An anesthesiologist would have a field day with this.

We as a society are better than this. Public opinion is shifting. America is striving to be a better nation, not like the third world countries that still practice government executions.

That doesn't give us the right to commit cruel and unusual punishments on people.

They do it intentionally, so there's no violation of the Constitution.

Mexico banned the death penalty. Look at their crime rate.
