Inmate Dies 2 Hours After Execution in Arizona

Those who do not do what is necessary to end evil, perpetuate, condone and abet evil.

More than that... they are also giving evil legitimacy.

I didn't say it does, just seemed you looked down on others because of it as if you were perfect. If I am incorrect I apologize.

Im not looking down on anyone. Just disagreeing with a fundamental issue.

"gasping for air, snorting for more than a hour"..
"Very disturbing to watch ... like a fish on shore gulping for air." Inmate's execution takes nearly 2 hours
"An Associated Press reporter who witnessed the execution saw Wood start gasping shortly after a sedative and a pain killer were injected into his veins. He gasped more than 600 times over the next hour and 40 minutes." Arizona inmate dies 2 hours after execution began

you are right-one of the prison guards should have shot him or brained him with a nightstick

I don't get it. Those that argue that the DP is horrible are holding the life of the criminal as more important than the life of the victim.

It is actually kind of disgusting.

Wait until you get to the part about how consideration for the victims in sentencing is wrong.

They basically use anesthesia to put them under before they administer the lethal drug(s).
Again. He was reportedly conscious
"he was apparently left conscious long after the drugs were administered." Arizona killer Joseph Wood dies almost two hours after execution begins | World news | theguardian.com

I had four wisdom teeth cut out at one time and didn't feel a thing till I woke up. Your line of "suffering" is going nowhere.
With petty examples of course it wont

Perhaps Karma?

It doesn't matter what he did. This reflects on us as a society. We have no right to treat people cruel and unusually, period. This is about us, not the criminals.

And that matters why? If the diseased among the flock needs removed for the health and safety of the flock, then what do the numbers matter?
How much need to die??
If we should start liberally handing out death left right who else needs to go?

If those capable of murder are not ended and the threat permanently removed, then they are always a threat to us all.
Being locked up in a high security prision isnt enough?

Death is also natural. We all die sometime.
Killing someone is not natural. That is partialy why its a crime in the first place. Why should the state do it?

the question becomes-was it cruel and unusual given the types of death penalties that were imposed over the last 220 or so years

It absolutely matters what he did. When one commits a murder, one forfeits one's own humanity.

No, the question is, is it cruel or unusual to us today. A lot of past execution methods are today seen as cruel and unusual.

This kind of **** is awful and no one should stand for it. It doesn't matter what the criminal did, we shouldn't be treating people like this.

How did his victim(s) die? Was it quick and painless?

That doesn't give us the right to commit cruel and unusual punishments on people.

how do you know this mope felt any pain?

as I said, I am ambivalent about the DP based on my mistrust of government. If the mope was guilty, I really don't care how he is croaked as long as it isn't torture. lets go back to hanging the mopes. or firing squad.

How do you know he didn't? See, we shouldn't have these questions. Most likely, he did suffer, and it is just plain wrong. The state of Arizona violated the constitution, and they should be ashamed of themselves. It doesn't matter what he did, it does however matter what we do, and killing people with untested drugs is just wrong.

I really can't decide if his angst ridden, hand ringing heart break over murderers (and not just murderers, but capital murderers) is really, really funny or some sort of sad commentary where our values are.

as I said, rope is cheap and quick

And having to believe that their crimes and victims don't matter is why I could never be convinced to oppose the death penalty.

Like I said before, there's this notion that leaving a nicer corpse is more humane and that's just untrue. There's probably nothing quicker than, say, a guillotine.

It's not heart break over murderers, it's heart break over the fact that we are willing to do this to other people. The fact that they are murderers is irrelevant, it's the fact that we are willing to use an untested method of execution on a prisoner that is chilling. It's the fact that in our constitution we very specifically outlaw cruel and unusual punishments, yet go along with this anyway. Those are the chilling things.

yeah but in this day and age of AIDS, Ebola Zaire, herpes 1-VII, lets keep the blood splatter to a minimum

It's not that they don't matter, however, no one loses their 8th amendment rights, ever.

Agreed, but no one has established that there was anything cruel and unusual about the execution. The fact that he lived for two hours post injection doesn't meet the threshold.
