Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Report

Re: Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Whatta Great Country, eh?

I'd agree generally. However, the devil is in the details. How he's financing it may indeed be an issue. I'm not aware that previous presidents have made such purchases while still in office.

George W. Bush Bought 98K Acres In Paraguay - why?
Why might the current U.S. President and his family need a 98,840 acre ranch in Paraguay protected by a semi-secret U.S. military base manned by U.S. troops exempted from war crimes by the Paraguyan government? <snip>

Did he actually buy that while in office? Links would be good.

Re: Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Whatta Great Country, eh?

If they can afford it, what's the problem?

There could easily be conflicts of interest. Who owns the loan? Is he getting a sweetheart deal?

If he's getting a loan, yes, he is getting a sweetheart deal. EVERYONE in a position of power gets a sweetheart deal. Whether or not it ever surfaces is the only variable.

Oh no problem. I just think he should divide his fortune up among the 'po as he preaches to the rest of us. Do as I say, not as I do. Why doesn't he set an example?

Why do Conservatives hate success?

I'm wondering why Obama would be moving into a conservative neighborhood ?

That's Rep. Sonny Bono's and Rep. Mary Bono's old Congressional district.

Well, if we enforced a "no hypocrisy" standard on all of our politicians there wouldn't be any politicians left.

Meh... there's much bigger fish out there to fry, IMO.

Perhaps, but no about the sweetheart deal. There are politicians who go out of their way to pay top dollar in order to avoid any perception of the sweetheart deal. The active POTUS should always be one of those.

Maybe he thought it needed a little diversity? Another wealthy elitist white man, but this time with a little African blood thrown in for good measure.

In 2006, the Bush family purchased 98,842 acres in Chaco Paraguay. <snip>
What is the Bush Family's Interest in Paraguay? | The Thinkering News

WMR's Paraguayan sources have confirmed that George W. Bush recently bought 42,000 hectares (over 100,000 acres) of land in Paraguay's northern "Chaco" region. <snip>
Bush Family Paraguay Hideaway Update

You said that you were not aware of a sitting president making large expensive purchases and the Bush/Paraguay hoopla popped in my head. I just Googled for some links referring to that issue. I do not vouch for the websites or any agenda they might be pushing. Just trying to point out that once upon a time, the libbos were whining about this much in the same way the wingnuts are whining about Obama doing his thing.

Look on the bright side. That's something you guys have in common with each other. Build on that.

Myself, I think that extravagant purchases like this zero in on something we all should pay attention to. Our presidents, somehow, amass a lot more money in their piggy banks than their paychecks add up to. That should be a red flag.

I for one can't wait for the day that he leaves office, moves far away from me, and becomes a subject of the ideology he pushes.

Don't get me wrong. If Bush did buy

Both of those links are bull****, you should know that. They are as all the other sites I've found making the same claims, except those other sites have at least the dignity to include that their claims are speculation and that they have no proof. All this is apparently based upon one of the Bush daughters' trips to Paraguay with UNICEF.

Funny thing, the speculation was never confirmed.

Btw, thought I'd add in the reporting of the only semi-reputable org that ran this bull****, The Guardian:

Rumours of Mr Bush's supposed forays into South American real estate surfaced during a recent 10-day visit to the country by his daughter Jenna Bush. Little is known about her trip to Paraguay, although officially she travelled with the UN children's agency Unicef to visit social projects. Photographers from the Paraguayan newspaper ABC Color tracked her down to one restaurant in Paraguay's capital Asunción, where she was seen flanked by 10 security guards, and was also reported to have met Paraguay's president, Nicanor Duarte, and the US ambassador to Paraguay, James Cason. Reports in sections of the Paraguayan media suggested she was sent on a family "mission" to tie up the land purchase in the "chaco".

Erasmo Rodríguez Acosta, the governor of the Alto Paraguay region where Mr Bush's new acquisition supposedly lies, told one Paraguayan news agency there were indications that Mr Bush had bought land in Paso de Patria, near the border with Brazil and Bolivia. He was, however, unable to prove this, he added.

You can already hear the people in Rancho Mirage saying, "There goes the neighborhood."
The problem is, the Obama are moving to close to my territory.

If the California state initiative passes and California is broken up into five states, Obama will be living in one of the redest states in America.

I wonder if Obama knows how close his new home is to Arizona ? Probably not.

Paraguay in a spin about Bush's alleged 100,000 acre hideaway | World news | The Guardian

Right on. I really didn't bother reading what they said. I knew going in they were probably bull****. Like I said, your post just reminded me of that time and how similar the libbos were reacting to it much the same way I suspect righties will react to what Obama does, bull**** or not.

But it does make me wonder. I know I have Googled before how much a prez gets paid and what's provided for him and it's monetary worth. Doesn't it seem like they get richer than rich, all the while, just getting paid President wages? Bush was already filthy rich. Clinton claims they were broke but they got millions now. Obama buying a four million dollar crib?

Professional, career politicians. So crooked they screw their shoes in the morning.

Am I the only one here that finds this to be suspect?

Yeah, they really don't get paid all that much. I know they bring in bank on speaking engagements and sweetheart deals AFTER they leave office. But Obama had the two books didn't he? That should have set him up pretty well.

They get paid what, ~$500K/year? Granted that's not professional athlete money, but they don't do nearly the work that a professional athlete does either. Still pretty good bank, and much more than they deserve given what they do, which pretty much is just two things, lying and golfing.

I'm sure his accountant will make it all look legit.

Pardon me if I wear my conspiracy hat for a minute.

Consider this. If a street gang can start a business front as a rap music promoter, pay a rap artist 20k to perform, print up 200k worth of tickets, buy the tickets themselves with drug money and then just give the tickets away.... Now the money is legit. Earned off ticket sales. Bada bing...

What's to stop a politician from publishing 100k copies of their book and have the corporate crooks, who want to buy their influence, just purchase his books instead of outright bribing him?

Just a thought.

Well hopefully he has enough acreage to house his new guests. And water. And food. And septic facilities. And healthcare. And lawyers. And Wifi. And all the other things we, as a nation, were expected to provide free of charge to his new found friends.

Since 2001, the president has earned a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment.[78][79] The most recent raise in salary was approved by Congress and President Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001.

It's on the wiki. Before the Clinton increase it was half that.

I'm actually surprised. I had them pegged for a house in Hawaii, not California. Interesting. I wonder why there?
