The missile launcher used to down Malaysia Air flight MH17 is probably back in Russia after it was imported into Ukraine a few weeks ago, a well-placed source with access to the latest intelligence told Fox News Friday night.

The same source also said the missile that brought down the plane Thursday killing all 298 on board was fired from Schnidze, a town in eastern Ukraine.

"We are building a case," the senior U.S. official told Fox News. "It is damn near bulletproof at this point."

Igor Strelkov, the local separatist commander who likely ordered the strike and who was heard in phone intercepts released by the Ukrainian Interior Ministry bragging about having brought down the plane, will likely be punished by Moscow, according to a well-placed source.

How will Moscow punish the rebels they supplied and enabled?

What's next and will this end peacefully?

They won't; I expect to see more of what's already happened - the Kremlin pointing fingers at Kiev and Kiev pointing forcefully at Moscow.

Let's hope that the crime scene will not be contaminated, or that it hasn't already been contaminated, so that a fair conclusion can be drawn. I personally have no doubt in my mind that it was indeed Russian equipment that was used, and that it was most likely handled by Russian-trained combatants.

I just don't want this to ruin Putin's clean cut image.

And your evidence for that is??

Where have I heard the slam dunk before? What's rt, Press TV, Al Jazeera, and CCTV saying? Going to have to hear it all. Do investigations first. Who would find Washington credible at this point.

Well Al Jazzera (English anyways) is blaming the Russian rebels and Russia. You probably shouldn't bother with the other ones.

Al Jazeera is reporting. They have far less opinion and commentary than does FOX and CNN. I watched them this am and see that they reported that a senior WH official has confirmed that the separatists brought the plane down with a SAM, although this senior WH official, nor Al Jazeera offered any evidence to support the claim.

They have been shooting things down for the past few months and they are the ones guarding it and denying entry to investigators.

They have been shooting down military aircraft for the past months. Of course they are guarding it, they don't trust Kiev in possession of the evidence anymore than Kiev trusts them.

Various statements made by Russian separatists around the time of the incident; the nature of the weapon used (heavy duty, can not be bought on the black market - only makes sense if it was either supplied by the Russians or stolen); the knowledge required to operate such machinery; and so on. So far, from what we know, the Russian hypothesis fits best, but perhaps more evidence will be uncovered at a later stage.

There is plenty of evidence, they are the ones who have been shooting planes over the past few months, and seem adamant about preventing investigators from investigating the plane which means they are probably responsible for it. The rebels do not want people to have evidence of who did it.

As Apache and others have pointed out, the separatists had control of supply stores from the beginning with such weapons, and there were some Ukrainian army defectors that joined them. Means and motive isn't proof. Kiev certainly has the means and motive as well.

MILITARY AIRCRAFT! The separatists don't trust Kiev in possession of the evidence anymore than Kiev don't trust them. Of course they're going to guard it.

The idiot US gummint created the crisis that led to the downing by supplying in excess of $5 billion of taxpayer aid to anti-Yanukovych groups.

U.S. Obscures Foreign Aid To Ukraine, But Here's Where Some Goes

Without such aid, there wouldn't have been an illegal coup against the democratically elected regime in the Ukraine, and hence, no need for pro-Russian groups to wage a civil war against the anti-Yanukovych groups. In war, accidental shoot downs (and/or friendly fire) happen.

The American taxpayer (and especially the moronic war-mongering right wing) in the US needs to grow up and start holding its govt. accountable.

These guys don't get that. It's always US benevolent, everyone else evil.

The investigation has been underway since the plane was shot down.

Deny what you want but this the latest evidence available. Though incomplete, all evidence is pointing at the rebels.

"Evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile from an area controlled by Russian-backed separatists inside of Ukraine," Obama said, noting that it's not the only time in recent months that the pro-Russia rebels had taken down airplanes.

ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power,

in a presentation to the U.N. Security Council, said that pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine had been spotted by a Western journalist manning an SA-11 surface-to-air missile system at a location near where MH17 went down just hours before the plane crashed.

"We assess Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 ... was likely downed by a surface-to-air [SAM] missile, an SA-11, operated from a separatist-held location in eastern Ukraine," she said.

Separatists had posted videos and boasts online about downing a Ukrainian plane Thursday, Power said, adding that some of those materials have since been deleted.

"Because of the technical complexity of the SA-11, it is unlikely that the separatists could effectively operate the system without assistance from knowledgeable personnel. Thus we cannot rule out technical assistance from Russian personnel in operating the systems," she added.

Obama: Evidence MH17 Hit By Missile From Rebel-Held Area Of Ukraine : The Two-Way : NPR

Samantha powers:lamo NO evidence has been presented, only claims. That said, if the Russian separatists shot down the plane it would be apparent that it was mistaken identity.

And so the story is refined.

The ongoing writing of history for future generations to read about. Untrue, but written.
