Some nice changes in some of the longer-term and broader unemployment measures, too.

Note: September 2007 is the last report prior to the official start of the Great Recession.

That is a nice number. Qualified, of course. But a good number in any event.

This jobs data provides further evidence that the narrative of ongoing modest to moderate economic growth continues. It also provides a fresh argument that the Q1 contraction was largely due to temporary factors. Firms would not be hiring at a robust pace if they lacked confidence that aggregate demand had reached levels that justified adding to their payrolls and that such demand would be sustained.

Because the economic news is good, the numbers are askew to Conservative eyes.

    Yes, a 3 percent contraction 6 years in is " Good news " .

    No, not really.

3/4 of them are likely temp and retail jobs.

The unemployment rate fell... again. Is that why you're talking about the 3% contraction instead of what the thread is about?

Table B-1. Employees on nonfarm payrolls by industry sector and selected industry detail
    Retail Trade: +40,200
    Temp help services: +10,100

    I don't know where you learned math, but 50,300/288,000= 17.5%, not 75%

Perhaps you should look at the data and not make guesses.
Therefore, since the world has still/Much good, but much less good than ill,
And while the sun and moon endure/Luck's a chance, but trouble's sure,
I'd face it as a wise man would,/And train for ill and not for good.

One need not speculate. If one goes to Table B-1 in the Employment Situation Report (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf), one can find the figures. Most of the new jobs were not comprised of temporary or retail sector jobs.
