Judge throws out George Zimmerman's libel suit against NBC[W:17]

Re: Judge throws out George Zimmerman's libel suit against NBC

Trayvon's getting his revenge on this man. Multiple arrests, frivolous lawsuit thrown out, his life is essentially in shambles - I guess all that money he got from copying AP photographs and running them through photoshop ran dry.

Re: Judge throws out George Zimmerman's libel suit against NBC

I don't think so. They purposely edited the 911 call in order to make it appear that the 911 operator never asked for a description of the skin color of Trayvon. They did this in the attempt to portray Zimmerman as a racist. Just like the rest of the media that sided with Trayvon tried to use all the 911 calls that Z had made since he lived in that area as only calling on black people, despite the fact that he had also called on other races also. The media, includeing NBC or whatever it is tried time and again to portray Zimmerman as racist. So much so that it riled the Black Panthers up enough to offer a reward for Zimmermans capture, dead or alive.

I well and truely believe that the Media should be utterly ashamed of itself for how they handled this whole thing.

I agree, and I just want to add: I wish (and maybe there is this possibility) people could sue for slander by negligence. You shouldn't be able to 'accidentally' leave out such obviously relevant facts, and then broadcast it for the world to consume. Malice or negligence, the outcome is the same.

Re: Judge throws out George Zimmerman's libel suit against NBC

Yes, they are. Everyone is responsible for their own words and actions. Doesn't matter if its Zimmerman, Obama, Bush, or King Tut. EVERYONE is responsible for their own words and actions. There's a reason that the Pen is Mightier than the Sword. Words can bring about peace or war far quicker than a single gun shot.

If I write or say something, I am responsible for writing or saying that. If someone acts in response to something I said, *they* are responsible for their actions. Do you want to know why?

because everyone is responsible for their own actions.

It will be appealed, obviously.

And whether you like Zimmerman or not, NBC did malign him again and again.

They need to be held accountable.

Nonsense.

This will be appealed, and Trayvon will have nothing to do with it.

 This is exactly what I said.

Trayvons dead. No way for him to get any kind of revenge.

To me, your post implied that is someone acts based on something I say, then I am responsible for their acts

But they are responsible for the words and or actions that they use that may spur people into action.

If I misunderstood you, then it's my bad, but your words (in the context of a thread about a libel suit) suggest otherwise

Re: Judge throws out George Zimmerman's libel suit against NBC

Can we just let it die? I don't care about him anymore, he was acquitted, which is probably the best verdict that could be reached. But could we just let it go rather than calling out everyone who has the "wrong" take on it?

The fact that he had a gun doesn't make him automatically right or wrong. I know we want to see the eeeeeevil libruls crucified....but just let it go.

He is the second coming of Jesus to many folks. Too bad he turned out to be a woman beater.

If in the absense of your words a person would not have acted, but with your words they do then you are partly to blame. Not for the actions that they take. But for your words that prompted them to take action. Your response seems to indicate that your words hold no power what so ever. That you can say anything and everything and it will not cause any response what so ever. If this is true then...what are your thoughts on the word "nigger" being used by a white guy against a black guy?

That makes more sense. The truth is, the phrase "people are responsible for their own words and actions" is not entirely true and the law reflects that. Words that are particularly "inciting" can leave one with (some measure of) responsibility, both legal and moral, for another person's acts.

Wrong crowd, wrong person. That would be Obama Supporters and Obama.

The idea that Zimmerman is the "second coming of Jesus" to anyone is utterly inane.

So is the idea that Obama is the "second coming of Jesus" to Obama supporters.

I agree. That phrase by itself is not entirely true. Which is why I added the whole bit about "the pen is mightier than the sword" and "peace or war" bit. ;) Sorry for the confusion. :)

Interesting you didn't direct this to the person who first brought this up.

Again, I agree. Unfortenately there are those that believed it...at least at the begining of Obama's first term. I don't see it near as much now a days.

I jumped to the end of the thread. Not much interesting about that. Do I need to go back and address the original comment so as not to offend the impartiality police?

As if you would. :D

Lol - appealed until he finds a judge willing to hear it? Good luck finding a judge that wants that kind of publicity.

Trayvons dead. No way for him to get any kind of revenge.

And yet... George Zimmerman's life doesn't seem to catch a break. Trayvon's getting his revenge. I'll only be a matter of time before Zimmerman decides to put a bullet through his own skull.

I never saw anyone claim that George Zimmerman was the second coming of Jesus.

There, that should make X happy.

I can find people who believe Obama is a lizard person. Cherry picking the dumbest of the dumb is using a statistically insignificant group in order to tar a whole.

Re: Judge throws out George Zimmerman's libel suit against NBC

Judge Nelson has proved she should not be on the bench over and over again.

Isn't there an amendment to the constitution that says something about freedom of speech, the press and media have these rights too, should she have stripped that law down to bare bones and ruled against NBC?

If you do not realize it, you can say what ever you want. That is freedom of speech. But there are still laws that cover libel, such as alleged in this case, and slander.
The first Amendment doesn't cover you against libel.

And the reason her ruling is being appealed.

Re: Judge throws out George Zimmerman's libel suit against NBC

At what point does it stop? If certain commentators call Sandra Fluke a whore, are they responsible? Or is that different?

Yes, it is different.

If people in the media voice their opinion, that's freedom of speech and whether you agree with that opinion or not, it's protected. This isn't an issue of what NBC said or believed about Zimmerman, this was a case where they edited a recording of a phone call to police by Zimmerman (who had just shot a black teenage boy) which by doing so took him out of context and falsely gave millions of people the impression he was a racist.

In other words, what NBC did was falsely give millions of people the impression that Zimmerman implicated himself as a racist after killing a black kid. Or put another way, thanks to NBC, millions of people saw Zimmerman as a self confessed racist who murdered a black kid, who had not been arrested and was living his life free as a bird. He received numerous death threats because of this, it put both him and his family in a lot of danger, and forced them to have to go into hiding.

Don't you believe that NBC should be held responsible for their actions?
