Obama seeks $500M to train, equip Syrian rebels

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama asked Congress Thursday for $500 million to train and arm vetted members of the Syrian opposition, as the U.S. struggles for a way to stem a civil war that has also fueled the al-Qaida inspired insurgency in neighboring Iraq.

The military training program would deepen the Obama administration's involvement in the more than four-year conflict between rebels and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad. If approved by Congress, the program would supplement a covert train-and-assistance program run by U.S. intelligence agencies.

The Syria program is part of a broader $65.8 billion overseas operations request that the administration sent to Congress Thursday. The package includes $1 billion to help stabilize nations bordering Syria that are struggling with the effects of the civil war. It also formalizes a request for a previously announced $1 billion to strengthen the U.S. military presence in Central and Eastern Europe amid Russia's threatening moves in Ukraine.

WTH? He really doesn't have a clue.

We already have been arming them and training them for quite some time.

Because these sorts of ideas have worked out so well for us over the last 50 years.

So, there was this guy, and he was all like, "An enemy of my enemy is my friend", so, he gave them training and weapons. And then, like, those people proceeded to use that training years later to terrorize other countries, even ones we had no animosity towards. And, like, this other dude decided what we should REALLY do is remove ....

Ah ****, I'm tired of typing. This is astoundingly stupid.

This increased assistance to one of the parties to a bitter sectarian conflict that involves few U.S. interests is disappointing. The U.S. would do far better to define its Asia Pivot and begin giving it substance than aiding armed elements that are unlikely to be hospitable to U.S. interests or strategic regional U.S. allies. Hopefully, Congress won't agree to provide such assistance.

While Putin is arming and supporting president Assad! Beautiful. The all powerful MIC, with a very large appetite.

I must find a stronger description for this administration; My normal "INEPT" is a woefully inadequate.

I'm tired of the whole thing to begin with. Every time something happens in the ME lets send people and money. All these politicians love this malarkey.

Hey Thom, about your signature.

Didn't Thomas Jefferson say that?

Ugh.... I say we just build a giant wall around the whole ME say "Aight guys have at it till there is one side left", press record, and then sit back and watch the ensuing chaos with popcorn in hand.

Does he even know what the philosophy of these 'rebels' is? Remember this is the same guy who supported the Muslim Brotherhood over Mubarak (a long time American ally) who overthrew Gadaffi and made a mess in Libya, and who left Iraq where the Islamists are now creating a terrorist state extending into Syria.

It's well past time that the American people began asking themselves whose side this guy is on.

Heya Grant. :2wave: He knows the MB is involved......oh and lets not forget he invited the Syrian Rebel/ Terrorist Leader to the White House.

Wouldn't we be defacto arming the same people we currently want to bomb in Iraq?

Well sir, I believe you are correct. Its been so long since I have talked to Jeff-boy .Even though some did not think so, Jeff-boy and I were close friends and I was able to address him as Jeff-boy or Jeff; all others were required to address him as Mr. Jefferson as was required in social norms of the time. Now that you have brought the specific situation back to mind maybe someday I may relate that story in the Tavern. Until then I will still accredit the sig to Missouri Mule for that too is part of the story.

Don't want to derail this thread so I will add ....

Ol' Jeff-boy would not be very happy with M.E. foreign affairs today.

Have a terrific day Mason

Yes...., but don't tell the POTUS that it might hurt his ego.
We're freeing terrorists to get back traitors and now we're arming the people who are killing our allies in an Iraqi government that only exists because we put it there.

My head feels like a football...

Yeah... I've smelt something awfully funny ruminated from the bowels of Liberal America and I don't like it.... oh wait... its a giant turd.... and Liberal America is waiting for OBAMA MAMMA to change their diaper to rid us of the stench.... truth is OBAMA MAMMA never plans on changing the diaper.... guess liberal america will have to wait for the next POTUS to change its diaper.

It's more than that. The last couple of months feel like a chapter out of 1984 or something.

It seems to me that Assad is about the only person who could manage a stable Syria, that quite a lot of the rebels he is fight is AQ and ISIS in Syria. Assad has used his Air Force to bomb ISIS to help Miliki and the good old USA in Iraq. Just when I thought things could get more confusing in the ME, it does.

The time to help the Syrian rebels has long since passed. It's too late now.

This administration's foreign policy is a tragedy of epic proportions for which we, as a country, will be paying possibly the next 100 years. Those people have zero awareness of history, foreign cultures. and myriad other facets of geo-politics; all the while dancing, prancing, and posturing an ego-maniacal vision of their own perfections of how they can make the world the way they believe it should be.

The Presidency is a tough and ugly job; he said he had the answers. Well, maybe he does have answers...if, so they are to very different and the wrong questions.

ARGHH !
