Obama seeks $500M to train, equip Syrian rebels

Ive spoken out numerous times about not arming any of these guys. Obama is in charge and to blame, and he needs to get out of office asap.

Well you weren't here during the Bush administration, criticizing his support of militant Islamic groups, time will tell if you criticize the next GOP-administration that will be doing the same thing.

Obama seeks $500M to train, equip Syrian rebels

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama asked Congress Thursday for $500 million to train and arm vetted members of the Syrian opposition, as the U.S. struggles for a way to stem a civil war that has also fueled the al-Qaida inspired insurgency in neighboring Iraq.

The military training program would deepen the Obama administration's involvement in the more than four-year conflict between rebels and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad. If approved by Congress, the program would supplement a covert train-and-assistance program run by U.S. intelligence agencies.

The Syria program is part of a broader $65.8 billion overseas operations request that the administration sent to Congress Thursday. The package includes $1 billion to help stabilize nations bordering Syria that are struggling with the effects of the civil war. It also formalizes a request for a previously announced $1 billion to strengthen the U.S. military presence in Central and Eastern Europe amid Russia's threatening moves in Ukraine.

WTH? He really doesn't have a clue.

I have nothing against giving the rebels training and equipment. I just don't think the US should pay. The problems should be handled and the costs born by the neighbors. The US can help but should not make the thing its problem.

This will just cause more of the Shia to rally to Assad as well. Not to mention Iran. Which as we see there they are toying with BO and his Team.

These are some of the same rebels that are tied to the group taking over Iraq. I really think they are making a huge mistake!

He was never a supporter of ISIS (Obama was), and he certainly wasn't making friends with Iran-the worlds largest state sponsor of terror.

You do understand that there are more than a couple militant Islamic groups lurking about don't you? And, that every administration since Carter at least, has supported militant Islamic groups right? It's a broader american foreign policy problem than just Obama.

More than two? Oh thank you for your fascinating news. Really. Obama IS our foreign policy-and he's failing like its cool.

In the footsteps and likeness of his predecessors, its just too bad that you can't see that.

Right. It's Americans funding terrorist groups that are causing the problems. Without the Americans Islamic terrorism would have stopped long ago. Same with Communism, Nazism, etc.

It's become ever more difficult to ridicule the anti Americans because they make themselves so much more ridiculous than any parodist can attempt to do.

Anti-American. Stop being ridiculous. If my criticisms of US foreign policy equates to anti-American, then your daily ridicule and demeaning of Obama equates to a hatred of America. Probably why you don't live here. Quite obviously you can't refute US support of militant Islamic groups over the years, so you take the low road of attacking the poster. Educate yourself about dissent. And then stay on the issues.

But your criticisms of the US goes back to the 1950's without acknowledging what America was up against at the time. There is no perspective or understanding about the choices available. You trot out the same cliches Leftists have been using for years, like its all about fruit, all about oil, all about big business, etc. without ever understanding the alternatives or available choices of the time and their consequences. It's so one-dimensional and so predictable that it becomes tiresome to read this constant grade school gibberish. The US education system has failed you big time.

No they don't, with regards to Latin America, they extend back to the creation of the Monroe Doctrine. If you want to debate with me Grant, stop stifling it by calling my criticisms of foreign policy un-American, and me uneducated because you cant refute the mountain of evidence that slays your lies. Otherwise you can go it alone.

Why call me female when you're the one serving the Iranian regime on your knees.
I calleD you mam, because you are a dishonest low life degenerate son of a b!tch. I on the other hand serve no one, but I speak the the truth. U.S. senator rand Paul even said ISIS is supported/armed by the U.S. government.

You need to learn to control your emotions.

This doesn't surprise me one bit. You want stability in Syria, Assad is your man. Assad is using his Air Force to help Miliki fight ISIS or IS now, he is our man. The situation in Iraq is about as crazy as it gets.

Yep, been pointing out that president Assad was the Syrian stability from the beginning of the Syrian insurgency. For their part, so did China and Russia, also correctly predicting/WARNING that US interference in Syria would cause that conflict to embroil the entire region! And now look about.

There are times when the U.S. foreign policy totally lacks common sense. Destroy stability in Egypt, destroy it Libya and now trying to destroy it in Syria. now I am not saying Mubarak, Kadaffi or Assad are nice guys. But each brought stability to their country, none of those three were direct enemies of ours. It's no wonder the president's foreign policy numbers are in the tank.

Now I am not blaming the president for what is happening in those three countries as the discontent, protests, even rebels fighting the governments of those countries had begin before he stepped in. But I do wonder if he didn't choose the wrong to back.

Yep, all true. You did forget to mention Saddam Hussein however, which, by this time, put Bush's foreign policy numbers in the tank as well. Obama chose the wrong people to back just as his predecessors all have. That is, wrong on a humanitarian level, beneficial however to other interests.

Perhaps it is time we just stay out and let things play out. Let other pick up the costs and do the fighting. I do not think we are helping the situation one iota. But that is just my opinion.
