Don't you think the standard for an audit by the IRS should be a tad higher than someone's whim?

It is troubling. The fact that Lerner needed these basic concepts pointed out to her while she was running the EO department is shocking.

Interesting. In your link I see just the opposite, unless I'm imagining the words "Looked like they were inapproriately offering to pay for his wife. Perhaps we should refer to Exam?".
    From the OP
"It's very troubling that a simple clerical mix-up could get a taxpayer immediately referred for an IRS exam without any due diligence from agency officials."
Going after a United States Senator is pretty brazen.
Neither of those two things actually happened

If the "someone" happens to be an IRS official or agent, and the "whim" is evidence of a prohibited activity, then "No, that's enough to look into the situation"

No, you aren't imagining that or the email recipient's reply [bolding mine]:

The other IRS official, Matthew Giuliano, waved her off, saying an audit would be premature because Grassley hadn't even accepted the invitation.

"It would be Grassley who would need to report the income," Giuliano said. Emails: IRS official sought audit of GOP senator

Also according to the Yahoo article, Senator Grassley never did receive an invitation and did not attend the event.

Why was Lerner so interested and eager? Well, also according to the Yahoo article, "Grassley had been an outspoken critic of the way the IRS policed tax-exempt groups even before the tea party controversy erupted last year."

What evidence of a prohibited activity was there?

I like pete a lot even though we are diametrically opposed politically, but he refuses to see any wrong when it comes to Lerner (and I suppose by extension, Obama).

This whole IRS thing stinks to high Heaven, and the lack of any concern from some people is even worse.

Remember, folks. If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's clearly a gerafe.
