The cases involved abuse at the two schools from the early 1950s to 1984, Pfau said. More than a third of the plaintiffs say they were sexually abused by former O’Dea teacher Edward Courtney, who had been removed from four schools across the country for molesting boys before coming to O’Dea in 1974, according to court documents. The lawsuit alleged that by 1973, the Christian Brothers knew Courtney was “a serial sexual predator who could not be ‘cured’ or ‘treated,’ ” but the order allowed him to teach at O’Dea from 1974 to 1978 anyway.
Courtney went on to work at other schools, including Seattle’s Our Lady of the Lake School in Wedgwood and St. Alphonsus Parish School in Ballard, and he continued to sexually abuse children. He pleaded guilty in 1988 to indecent liberties with a minor.
Other former O’Dea students said they were abused by teacher G.A. Kealy, who also had a long history of sexually abusing boys, the lawsuit said, including many at Briscoe and O’Dea. He was openly referred to by both students and faculty as “Feely Kealy,” according to court documents.
One student’s father went to archdiocese officials to complain about the abuse but was told there was nothing they could do because Kealy was a Christian Brother, according to court papers. Another O’Dea student said he was abused by a theater and dance instructor in the mid-1980s, but nothing was done to protect the boy from the teacher after he reported the abuse to a school counselor.

A classic example of what went on. So many people in the Catholic Church turned a blind eye to this to protect the church instead of the children. Why aren't those people being prosecuted?

And why isn't the Pope excommunicating them?

Hypocrisy knows no bounds in the Catholic Church.

First of all, it may be that the statute of limitation on cases that occured in the 1950'-80's has passed. Do you that these people in fact have not been excummunicated?

It baffles me why catholics continue to give money hand over fist to an organization that defends child rapists. 100 catholics paying tithe won't replace those 12 million dollars in their lifetimes.

No, but a cushy nonprofit status and hundreds of billions invested in real estate, equity and credit markets will replenish it quite quickly.

I know for a fact that the church virtually did nothing.

The church should take it upon itself to root out all the child rapists in their midst and turn them over to the authorities. It wants to rebuild its image for the modern world, and that would be a hell of a step.

They probably have not. But....

I think Top Cat has misunderstood what excommunication in the Catholic church is and when it is applied. Basically, it is very hard to exommunicate somebody for criminial conduct. It does not matter if the criminal conduct is sex abuse, murder, or say, theft. Rather, excommunication is normally reserved for people who knowingly deny and religous truth, and especially when they deny religous truth and then induce others to deny it as well.

Most criminals can commit alot of crime, but never deny the religous principal prohibiting their actions. As a side note, the Mormons do excommunicate people for criminal acts.

In part, because it is usually past tense (defended). In the Seattle case, the crimes occured between 30 and 60 years ago.

As a side note, though rapes did occur, most of the abuse was not rape. Rather, it was being "feely Kealy", "peeking Pat". Though these actions are criminal and need to be severely punished, they are not rapes.
