Members of Amish communities in Ohio traveled to the Philippines for heartfelt reasons: They were there on service projects to help less fortunate people. Unfortunately, they came home with unwelcome hitchhikers: measles viruses.

Those travelers hadn't been vaccinated against this highly contagious disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. As a result, they have triggered an outbreak of more than 130 cases, primarily among their unvaccinated friends and relatives in Amish communities

Seems to me a good reason for government to be involved in health care choices and for religion to stay in the church. I have never understood people not vaccinating, it is just as bad a smokers thinking second hand smoke is no big deal because they are entitled to their cigs.

Vaccinations and smoking aren't really comparable.

So to keep communicable diseases from spreading, you are in favor of the government taking significant steps? Where would you have isolated all the people with HIV back in the day?

I had the measles when I was 5. That was before the invention of the vaccination. Trust me, you don't want that illness.

If you want HIV then screw anyone bareback as often and as frequently as possible. If don't want the virus, wear a condom and not sleep with every John (or Jane) you encounter. HIV is completely preventable. Measles on the other hand is not except through vaccination.

So a total of 130 (out of 318million Americans) contracted the measles. No deaths. With these numbers, do you think we should start forcing vaccinations?

I, for one, am against forced anything when we're talking about medications.

I have no problems with forced vaccinations if someone wants to be a member of society.

You don't think that's a bit extreme considering how small the number of people contracting the disease? Percentage wise, it's about 0.0000004% of the US population. I don't think the numbers pan out to be worth the concern. If folks don't want to be vaccinated, it's their risk.

Call me when the numbers reach closer to 25%.

"Hey let me expand your notion into a completely different and ridiculous measure and also ignore the fact that diseases differ from each other"

Most of the people who die from the disease are young children. Do you have any idea how many children would have to die to reach your 25% threshold?

25%? For a contagious and potentially fatal disease? That's already an apocalypse-level outbreak, and that's when you want to start vaccinating? Jesus Christ.

I disagree.

This is Darwin at his finest.

Want to be an idiot?

Fine, you go right ahead.

When Mother Nature steps in and wipes out your stupidity don't come crying to us.

I've been vaccinated, my kids have been vaccinated, what do I care if folks want to be dumbasses?

Not vaccinating is not just religiously motivated. There are many people who are just lazy and don't get their children vaccinated until they are told they cannot start school without proof of immunizations. (Evidenced by resurgence in pertussis.) So, the government is ALREADY involved and makes the rules. The Amish don't go to public schools, so they are not held to such rigor. They do, however, shop in public places where everyone else shops and can spread things like measles to the rest of the unvaccinated population. And sometimes to the vaccinated population as vaccinations are not 100% effective. I speak as a mother who gave my children so many shots they felt like pin cushions, and my son still got mumps as did several others in his class at school.

But is a needless emergency that is completely preventable.

I care that their dumbass choice endangers their children, and others. My niece isn't old enough for all the recommended vaccines yet. Unvaccinated people put her in greater danger, and that makes me a tad ornery.

Vaccinations are already 'forced.' Don't believe it? Try putting your children in public school without them.

I have a right to increase exposure risk for children in school, damnit!

How's that working out for you?

Very poorly. That dastardly government prevented my choice from risking the lives of other children.

It's not my emergency.

Assuming you haven't been exposed, or your family. That is how I feel about these nuts who don't believe in vaccinations. Their silliness exposes all the rest of is. If they hate modern medicine they should move to central or the rift valley of Africa.

Vaccination should be a requirement for access to public schools and similar services and facilities. No conscientious, religious, or similar exceptions should be allowed.

Deaths from measles is extremely rare... so please, hold off with the hyperbolic nonsense.

Shouldn't your vaccinated children be safe? Isn't that the draw of forcing vaccinations in the first place?

It's still a serious illness and infecting a quarter of the population with any illness is catastrophic. The Black Plague never had anywhere near that level of infection.

although i feel its naive not to get vaccinated, its still their CHOICE to decide.

you have to try and convince the Amish of the harm diseases can do the their way of life if not dealt with properly. i know that's a hard sell, but we need to try harder.
