'We are all the sum of our tears. Too little and the ground is not fertile, and nothing can grow there. Too much, the best of us is washed away.'

Killing one person is murder, killing 100,000 is foreign policy

He is absolutely right to be so critical. The United States has failed our allies in Eastern Europe miserably.
Yes, the choice to decline was in fact made.
Decline Is a Choice | The Weekly StandardFor America today, decline is not a condition. Decline is a choice. Two decades into the unipolar world that came about with the fall of the Soviet Union, America is in the position of deciding whether to abdicate or retain its dominance. Decline--or continued ascendancy--is in our hands.
. . . .
Facing the choice of whether to maintain our dominance or to gradually, deliberately, willingly, and indeed relievedly give it up, we are currently on a course towards the latter. The current liberal ascendancy in the United States--controlling the executive and both houses of Congress, dominating the media and elite culture--has set us on a course for decline. And this is true for both foreign and domestic policies. Indeed, they work synergistically to ensure that outcome.

Poland is asking themselves "What has the US done for us lately?" The answer - nothing good and nothing much. They should view their own interests and develop relationships that are beneficial to them - the US isn't doing much in that arena. Closer ties with Russia and Germany could benefit them economically and militarily.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.
