    I agree, that's hilarious.

It's sort of sad that an obvious scam artist and huckster like Ralph Reed can command an audience of serious republicans. I've been gone from the party for over a decade now, but I'd like to see it revived into something sensible. It won't happen when crooks like Reed are given a platform. It's particularly nauseating when a scam artist is heading up a conference devoted to faith issues.

And just to be balanced here, there are few on the democratic side I respect less than DWS - Lanny Davis would be one. I suspect she and Ralph could switch jobs and adopt the opposing position without losing a wink of sleep at night.

Not ... really? Couldn't care less, to be quite honest.
Freedom of speech is not freedom from criticism.

if you don't think we should defend religious freedoms then that is a different argument.
What about Muslim values? That's a religion, and religious freedoms are guaranteed in the Constitution. Shouldn't Obama have to defend Muslim values as well?

If these guys had said that Obama must defend America's 1st Amendment values they would have had my and a lot of other peoples support.

I don't believe that this will win many elections for them.

BTW: if anyone can point out where it says in the U.S. Constitution that defending Christian values is the presidents job, I'd like to see it.

This sounds like a bunch of far right religious malarkey to me.

The religious right's power probably peaked in the 80's and has slowly been ebbing since then. My response to government and religion has always been government needs to stay out of religion. But government needs to ensure all people can practice their religion and worship in according to their religion anywhere and whenever they want.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

As well as say what they want even if it goes against the political climate at the moment?

Sure, anyone can say whatever he wants. If you are talking about the Republicans saying President Obama should defend Christian values at home and abroad, I have no problem with them saying it. Now if President Obama and our government tries to enforce Christian values on me, I do have a problem with that. That is utilizing government to enforce one religious views on others who may not have those same views or none at all.

That is two different things, one is freedom of speech and protect, the other, government enforcement of Christian values on the citizens of the U.S. is against the 1st Amendment.

If I read too much into your question, I apologize. But I had a feeling this is where you were going.

I think he would be served better to defend American Values like the freedom of speech, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The core values of America so to speak. If the president is there to defend any special interest values over another one.

I don't really think its Obama's job to sponsor Christian values. Not to mention he has much bigger fish to fry right now.

I'm not asking our leaders to "defend" anything. It would be nice if they acknowledged that the soul of the country(and it's history) is intertwined with the christian religion in a way that is impossible to separate, no matter how secular the citizens of the country becomes. And spare me your argument that even though the country was founded by christians and the entire population was christian that somehow the founding fathers were not religious and were in no way influenced by christian values. It's not possible to any reasonable person who can read a history book.
