BAGHDAD — Refinery workers, witnesses and an Iraqi Army officer reported the seizure of Iraq’s biggest oil refinery by Sunni extremists on Wednesday after army helicopter gunships failed to repel their attack. But other Iraqi officials, including the commander of the garrison defending the refinery in Baiji, asserted that fighting was still going on inside the extensive facility, shut down by the violence.

Get ready for another spike in oil prices..... Which should remind us that, had we been pursuing alternative energy sources more vigorously, we wouldn't be depending on the most volatile area in the world for much of our oil. This should be a wake up call to all Americans to sack each and every Congress member who obstructs any attempt to wean us off Middle East oil. If we are not willing to do that, then, as Cassius once said, "The fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves", and we will economically deserve everything we get.

we need to completely replace oil as a transportation fuel, and this should be a top tier priority.

here's a bonus : as soon as we announce the moonshot and it looks like we're really going to transition, the gamblers on wall street will start scurrying away from oil like rats in a flooding basement. then prices will return to sane levels while we transition, and won't spike as much every time something happens in an oil producing nation.

should have decided to do this in the 1970s. now we absolutely have to get serious about it.

We have plenty of oil in the US. But we aren't pumping most of it. There is oil right under where I sit and I fricking forgot to retain the mineral rights to the last KY property I sold. Grrr.....

Question: When the last drop of oil has been pumped out from under the middle east, who will rule the world?

Think about it.

We have 4x the oil reserves in this country than all the other OPEC countries combined so we aren't 'dependent.' on ther oil. Also we already have a perfectly good alternative energy that we don't USE due to libdem enviro propaganda (Nuclear FTW guys) three mile island and other minute problems are near impossible with modern day fail safes. The proper energy model for us is France, they get 90% of their power from Nuclear and I think we should aim for the same.

Germany has some of the worst sunlight in the world, yet they have deployed 4 times the number of solar panels that the entire US has. And Germany is only about the size of Texas. We have the ability to lead the world in solar, but now that solar panels are cheap, and people are beginning to use them, the Koch Brothers are lobbying state legislatures to tax those solar panels to the point where people think twice about using them. Yes, profits are more important to some than energy independence, and some traitors would even give support to al Qaeda if it helped in boosting their bottom line.

America's green energy investment is probably wisest foreign policy decision it has made in the past 100 years.

1. Thanks for ignoring my solution :( (nuclear)
2. Solar is a good energy source and while germany leads in Solar it still only makes up 12-14% of their total energy production, but if we could reach even half of that for our country it would help a bit. (If we could go 90% Nuclear and 10% solar it would be awesome for us.)

Problem with nuclear is that it is not safe. All the safeguards in the world won't help if an earthquake hits. The next major New Madrid quake to hit will cause not one, but several Fukushima type disasters, right in the middle of the United States. It's not an issue of if, but when. Mother nature is a bitch that cannot be ignored. So your solution is not a solution at all.

Alternative energy is a joke.

Honestly, its just a joke thats perpetuated by ideologues and people that are technically challenged.

Pursuing a alternative energy plan aggressively doesn't change the facg that it's a highly inefficient technology.

That isn't true Nuclear IS SAFE granted yes a random earthquake COULD pose problems, but there are ways to work around that when you plan a building site, a foundation, and close enough to a geological institution to recieve advanced notice of any activity so they could turn the reactors off ahead of time. Truth is if you avoid building near a fault line you won't have any problems. In IL we have Byron Nuclear PP and it has never had a problem before. (Just don't build nuclear plants near fault lines)

Statement will be made at 12:30 ET after Obama meets with national security team.

Solar IS NOT a " Good " energy alternative.

And you should do a bit of research before you use Germany as a example.

They are more dependant on Coal than they were before they entered into their ill conceived " Green Revolution ".

First, Germany's consumers get to pay for all this " free and renewable " energy by way of premiums that are added to their utility bills.

They pay ths highest prices for energy than any other developed Nation and their air is dirtier than it was before they switched over to Green energy.

That's because there are inherent lags in Solar and Wind power that are picked up by Coal fired power plants.

Second, they built massive Windfarms off their Coast that continue to sit idle, NOT tied into the grid.

Thats because they can't afford to tie them into their Grid and no Outside investor is willing to lend thdm the Capital to do it.

They cant charge their Citizen's anymore so those Windfarms are just huge eyesores that USE POWER.

Yup. They have to run power to them to keep the Salt Air and Wind from destroying them.

What a waste. What a disaster

Dang, there went the neighborhood again.

Now those people will be in my ghetto with those Oklahoma credit cards again! looking for cheap gas.

We can agree to disagree on this, but you do make a good point.

The boys from Oklahoma roll their joints all wrong
They're way too skinny, and way too long
Well I ain't no holy roller, so I'll just smoke a bong

The lyrics to this song was the first thing I thought of when you mentioned Oklahoma. I'm not into country music, but this song makes me laugh my ass off every time I hear it. LOL.

Likewise, I do believe that Alternative energy is part of the solution, but wherever those supplies lack I think Nuclear (Geothermal too gotta love that Geothermal) could pick the slack up which would allow us to devote oil towards gas production (lowering fuel costs.) I dig your point about a need for Alt Energy, but we have to play our whole hand for the most effect.

What a crock of ****. Where did you get that drivel? Here's what is REALLY happening with the Germans offshore wind farm.

Germany’s first offshore windfarm pilot project, “Alpha Ventus,” has produced some impressive results for 2012. Alpha Ventus exceeded expectations for its annual yield in 2012. The offshore wind farm fed 267.8 gigawatt-hours of power into the German power grid. With that, its power yield is 15.3% higher than the originally forecast value. The good trend also continued in the first quarter of 2013.

267 gigawatt-hours is enough electricity to supply clean, renewable energy to approximately 70,000 households.

Good one!

Gas, $3.89 here now.

how much earl do we get from Iraq to make a difference in world oil prices?

and secondly, why did gas jump from $2.45 a gallon to $5.25 a gallon on 9/11/01?

Market Watch predicts oil will rise to $200 a barrel, why?

Is this stuff not tied to speculators some how?

Since Germany entered into its failed Green Revolution Utility rates for your average German have jumped 200 percent.

Germany's economic minister told a audience of Wind and Solar advocates that their switch to alternative energy was on the verge of total failure.

LOL !! Apparently you could hear a pin drop.

2012 ??

LOL !!

It's 2014 dude.

Their Government just declared their green energy " revolution " was on the verge of complete failure.

Too expensive and NOT Green.

C'mon man, check your Calendar once in a while.

OK Here's the data from 2014

On Sunday, Germany’s impressive streak of renewable energy milestones continued, with renewable energy generation surging to a record portion — nearly 75 percent — of the country’s overall electricity demand by midday. With wind and solar in particular filling such a huge portion of the country’s power demand, electricity prices actually dipped into the negative for much of the afternoon, according to Renewables International.

In the first quarter of 2014, renewable energy sources met a record 27 percent of the country’s electricity demand, thanks to additional installations and favorable weather. “Renewable generators produced 40.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, up from 35.7 billion kilowatt-hours in the same period last year,” Bloomberg reported.

LOL !!

Think Progress ? Stay away from hack websites and you might learn something.

The GERMAN FINANCE MINISTER just declared that their Green energy revolution was on the verge of TOTAL FAILURE.

At a meeting with a bunch of Wind and Solar advocates.

They were a little upset. Lol...

Utility rates for the average German citizen jas jumped 200 percent and their air is dirtier than it was before they entered into this disaster.

I bet you won't find that at " Think Progress "
