Extremists Attack Iraq’s Biggest Oil Refinery

BAGHDAD — Refinery workers, witnesses and an Iraqi Army officer reported the seizure of Iraq’s biggest oil refinery by Sunni extremists on Wednesday after army helicopter gunships failed to repel their attack. But other Iraqi officials, including the commander of the garrison defending the refinery in Baiji, asserted that fighting was still going on inside the extensive facility, shut down by the violence.
Get ready for another spike in oil prices..... Which should remind us that, had we been pursuing alternative energy sources more vigorously, we wouldn't be depending on the most volatile area in the world for much of our oil. This should be a wake up call to all Americans to sack each and every Congress member who obstructs any attempt to wean us off Middle East oil. If we are not willing to do that, then, as Cassius once said, "The fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves", and we will economically deserve everything we get.

we need to completely replace oil as a transportation fuel, and this should be a top tier priority.

here's a bonus : as soon as we announce the moonshot and it looks like we're really going to transition, the gamblers on wall street will start scurrying away from oil like rats in a flooding basement. then prices will return to sane levels while we transition, and won't spike as much every time something happens in an oil producing nation.

should have decided to do this in the 1970s. now we absolutely have to get serious about it.

We have plenty of oil in the US. But we aren't pumping most of it. There is oil right under where I sit and I fricking forgot to retain the mineral rights to the last KY property I sold. Grrr.....

Question: When the last drop of oil has been pumped out from under the middle east, who will rule the world?

    Think about it.
Redneck, hillbilly, fundie, Bible thumper, cracker, split tails, geezer, loon, xenophobe, islamaphobe, and homophobe are not words of tolerance.

We have 4x the oil reserves in this country than all the other OPEC countries combined so we aren't 'dependent.' on ther oil. Also we already have a perfectly good alternative energy that we don't USE due to libdem enviro propaganda (Nuclear FTW guys) three mile island and other minute problems are near impossible with modern day fail safes. The proper energy model for us is France, they get 90% of their power from Nuclear and I think we should aim for the same.

Germany has some of the worst sunlight in the world, yet they have deployed 4 times the number of solar panels that the entire US has. And Germany is only about the size of Texas. We have the ability to lead the world in solar, but now that solar panels are cheap, and people are beginning to use them, the Koch Brothers are lobbying state legislatures to tax those solar panels to the point where people think twice about using them. Yes, profits are more important to some than energy independence, and some traitors would even give support to al Qaeda if it helped in boosting their bottom line.

America's green energy investment is probably wisest foreign policy decision it has made in the past 100 years.

    1. Thanks for ignoring my solution (nuclear)
    2. Solar is a good energy source and while germany leads in Solar it still only makes up 12-14% of their total energy production, but if we could reach even half of that for our country it would help a bit. (If we could go 90% Nuclear and 10% solar it would be awesome for us.)

Problem with nuclear is that it is not safe. All the safeguards in the world won't help if an earthquake hits. The next major New Madrid quake to hit will cause not one, but several Fukushima type disasters, right in the middle of the United States. It's not an issue of if, but when. Mother nature is a bitch that cannot be ignored. So your solution is not a solution at all.

    Alternative energy is a joke.

Honestly, its just a joke thats perpetuated by ideologues and people that are technically challenged.

Pursuing a alternative energy plan aggressively doesn't change the facg that it's a highly inefficient technology.
