This is no surprise. Maliki has always been a sectarian, not national leader. Even as his country risks disintegration, Maliki remains committed to his singular focus on serving Shia interests, even at the expense of those of Iraq's other peoples regardless of the consequences of that pursuit. He would rather roll the proverbial dice on preserving Shia dominance than accept any formula that would allow all of Iraq's peoples full political participation.

I agree.

What is it with Obama and women that'll carry his water?

First Rice and Benghaz, and now Harf and Iraq.

What power does this guy have over these people that'll publicly torture the facts like this in the news media?

Bush had his water bearers to be sure.

This woman is just 33 years old, which raises the question of where she learned to lie so professionally at such an early age? Is this era the death of honesty in public life, where telling a lie well is considered to be a career accomplishment and accepted as such by the public?

His military laid down their arms, surrendered in the north, and now ISIS is moving towards Baghdad, and his people are going to defend Baghdad?

sheesh that guy needs to get a clue.

Must be, and makes sense that he had as well, but I don't recall specifically this level of fact torturing / spinning.

I admit, I am now more engaged and watching for it than I was then.

Joe Wilson, Valerie Plame, Scooter Libby, prison time!

Actually he is probably correct about that. Baghdad would be much more defended than Mosul.

What? How in the world is this a very different threat than what we saw before? It is literally the exact same group, they just changed the acronym.

To be fair to this woman, she's in an impossible position, trying to defend a feckless and uninvolved administration.

But this administration is getting to the point where they don't even try to lie well.

She should dye her hair. Being put in that impossible position strengthens the blond joke arena.

She is not in an impossible position, she can tell the truth. But telling the the truth appears to be a mark of politically naivety these days.

She would be fired if she told the truth. That's what books are for, after she leaves.

I agree she would be fired but it would be such a pleasure to finally hear the truth from someone in this administration. She would probably have a bigger best seller if she did tell the truth and wrote of the responses she received from the inner circle and from the Democrat Party. She could certainly expect to be annually audited.

There should be an extraction of US persons, period. Its a lost cause over there.

I agree.

All of the kings horses and all of the kings men couldn't turn Iraq into a functioning democracy.

That place is a lost cause that's not worth one American life.

You have been on this planet a long time.

What have you done to make this world a better place?

Just being a good person and helping your neighbor is enough. What good has BHO, who occupies the office of the (formerly) most powerful nation in the world done?

My only problem with is that they only sent 275. Send in 27,500 with the sole mission to protect the embassy and immediate vicinity...AGGRESSIVELY...and with drone and CAS.

Yea, they can fight side by side with Iran's Revolutionary Guard and chant long live Komeni! When did you become an Iranian sympathizer?

It wasn't always a 'lost cause'. There was an excellent chance that Iraq could survive had BHO not abandoned the country and those who had fought for it. Recall what Joe Biden said? Although he falsely tried to take credit for the success there was definitely success. Watch Joe Biden Call Iraq "One of the Great Achievements of This Administration" | The Daily Caller

You still have those neocons dreams in your head. Bush turned Iraq over to the Iranians when Maliki was elected and they gave the orders to kick us out. That was the "success" Biden really was talking about. No more troops= no more wasted American lives.........Just one more way Obama stopped us from digging that hole to hell path GW put us on. Now you want us to fight with the Iranians in a holy war....too much.

Watch the video first and then comment on what he was talking about.

Biden is one of the few politicians who has skin in the game yet you ridicule him. It is shameful.

I'll believe that when we see or hear of it.

1. The towns ISIL has taken over thus far have been Sunni towns. The last time the Sunni tribes turned against ISIL, ISIL almost didn't survive. It is therefore likely that ISIL has made a bargain with the Sunni tribal leadership - autonomy in return for victory. Most of the towns that have been taken thus far have had at least a heavy element that wanted to be taken over.

2. Baghdad is not a Sunni Town. It is run by the Shia, who will actually fight for it. Militia's fighting with actual determination can turn urban warfare into a bloody nightmare. For all it's resources and men, ISIL is still fighting a war on two and a half fronts - against Iraq, against Syria, and to an extent against other extremist groups who might take advantage to impinge on its territory. It is unlikely they have the ability to forcibly seize and hold a city the size of Baghdad against the will of its populace while also holding on to what they have already taken.

3. Baghdad is defended by Qods Force - Iranian Special Forces. These are the guys who gave us the Explosively Formed Penetrator, and almost caused a political swell at home large enough to drive us from Iraq. And Rouhani has already stated that the desecration of any significant Shia shrine would be a red line for him. My bet is, unlike our current feckless administration, he actually means that.
