    Sounds like you need to do a little reading of your own. The Federal Records Act only requires the retention of records which are "in connection with the transaction of public business." That doesn't mean all e-mails. And by the way, can you prove that the content of those e-mails related to the transaction of public business?

    Actually when you are using the government system, it does. Every single email I, for example, as a federal contractor, send on my government computers over their internet service is logged and saved for a minimum of 9 years.

    That is personal preference not required by law.

    could it be that your organization compels a retention standard more stringent than the records act, such that the standard required by your employing agency is more rigorous than that of the irs?

    Emails specifically dealing with non-profit groups are, "transaction of public business".

    Wouldn't it make sense that the IRS should be held to that same standard?
