And while that may help him win the right wing primaries - it will indeed kill him in the general. Hopefully it will be a repeat of 64.

The question then becomes what does the GOP do in response to that sort of debacle and what to the righties do when the toiler is flushed and they are swirling downwards?

They do not include Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina or Florida. The GOP trustworthy states add up to just 191.
To this day I remember as a kid chanting. "Stevenson, Stevenson, that the reason I like Ike." My family were Republicans, by the way.

Paul will be the guy who wants to let bigots turn away minorities from their businesses and it will keep him with the independent voter.

Like it or not - Romney had the best shot to overcome the electoral math you pointed out - and even then he lost. So who replaces Romney and is able to get by the far right loons?
For 2012, I think the one who had the best chance of unseating a vulnerable sitting president was Daniels from Indiana who sat on the sidelines. Pawlenty of Minnesota if give a better chance might have been able to attract more indies than Romney although Romney and Obama split the independent vote 50-50. For 2012 I think the question the Republicans need to ask themselves is who do they have than can win roughly 55% of the independent vote. With a smaller base, this is a must if they are going to win in 2016.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

I can remember the jingle, "I like IKE, You like Ike, Everyone likes IKE." My dad was an old yeller dog Democrat and I am sure he voted Stephenson, but my mom, she never said whom she voted for.

I also thought Daniels was a possibility but it seemed that the situation with his wife and family took him off the board.
One way they can win independents is if the Dems overreach and nominate somebody who can be vilified as a far leftist - perhaps Cuomo of New York of the senator from Massachusetts Warren - both from states than can be demonized in the hinterlands as bastions of liberalism.

In fairness, for nearly a third of the voters, Ted Cruz paid for that privilege on their behalf.

    Really?
Cruz actually spent money on this meaningless farce?
One more reason to disqualify the guy---lack of fiscal responsibility.
